A vibes trio revival at the Black Dog, another round of "jazz painting" at The Nicollet, an irresistible songstress presenting covering an iconic songwriter, the Twin Cities edition of a modern "Modern Jazz Quartet," a tribute to one of the greatest vocalist of all time from one of the Twin Cities' best, and a visit from a blazing sextet. And lots more song, lots more cool sounds this coming week on the Twin Cities jazz scene. Join in.

Big Gigs This Week
Sophia Shorai
Friday, October 9. Sophia Shorai is equal parts charm and talent, and both parts are large! She brings her individual takes on jazz and pop tunes to the stage at Vieux Carré. Hot off his JazzMN debut last weekend, pianist/vocalist Andrew Walesch will bring Sinatra and more to Parma 8200. Denny Malmberg joins Paula Lammers for happy hour at Crooners.  And at the Icehouse, the early evening sets feature the dazzling duo of Javi Santiago on piano and James Buckleyon bass.

Bottomless Pit
Friday Night Jazz at The Nicollet again features visual artist Tim Nyberg creating a painting in response to the music, and tonight the music could lead him into uncharted territory as Bottomless Pit returns to the stage. This is a quartet of long-standing local heroes-- Joel Shapira on guitar, Pete Whitman on sax, Matt Peterson on bass and Eric Gravatt on drums. Their repertoire covers the likes of Coltrane, Coleman, Shorter and original fare, and how that music will speak to Tim will be one of the best demonstrations of improvisation you will see or hear this week!

Bob Parsons*
After working in New York for 15 years, saxophonist Bob Parsons returned to the Twin Cities and was soon working with the Acme Jazz Company, producing their first recording and now serving as Artistic Director. Tonight Bob gets to shine as soloist and bandleader, heading a quartet at Jazz Central with a stellar cast--Chris Lomheim, Graydon Peterson and Mac Santiago.

Maud Hixson and Rick Carlson
Saturday, October 10. The charms of songwriter Cole Porter could not be in better hands (voice!) than those of Maud Hixson and Rick Carlson, who return to Jazz @ St. Barney's (St Barnabas Church in Plymouth) to explore "The Cole Effect." Explains Maud, this will be "an evening of stories about Cole Porter and a sampling from his absurdly huge stash of hits. Also a few obscurities, such as 'I Hate You, Darling' (how could I resist a title like that?) " How can we resist a gig like this?

Chris Bates
Back in his early career in the 90s, bassist Chris Bates put together his first vibes trio, Low Blows, with brother JT and vibes master Dave Hagedorn. Low Blows is back this weekend, the featured band on Saturday Night Jazz at the Black Dog. The opening act is a new incarnation of Central Standard Time, with Steve Kenny the lone veteran in a sea of young hotshots--vibes player Levi Schwartzberg, bassist Ted Olsen and drummer Matt Buckner.

Charles Fletcher
Jazz meets world music at Jazz Central tonight in the form of Maui Lotus: The Marilyn Allysum Group, formerly known as Quintessence. Influenced by the musical traditions of East and West, group plays with "an advanced rhythmic and harmonic platform that blends lyric improvising with powerful dynamics," a cross-cultural blending of instruments (Chinese, Indian, Tibetan, Western) that goes beyond jazz and global music. The award-winning ensemble includes Marilyn Allysum (piano, flute), Gu Zheng (vocals),  Charles Fletcher (bass guitars), Mike Hurley (drums and world percussion) and David Wolfe (Santoor -Persian harp).

Milo Fine
Avant gardist Milo Fine hosts music at Studio Toile d'Angles in North Minneapolis. Tonight's ensemble includes Milo on drums, piano and clarinets; Bruce Beverlin II on percussion and voice; Charles Gillett on guitar, and Elaine Evans on violin and pocket trumpet.  (See Milo's site for directions and entry instructions.)

Weekly gigs -- hear Talking Strings at the Loring Pasta Bar; JoAnn Funk and Jeff Brueskein the Lobby Bar of the Saint Paul Hotel; and the Benny Weinbeck Trio (with Gordy Johnson and Phil Hey) at Parma 8200.

Andrew Walesch
Sunday, October 11. Jazz brunch-- Andrew Walesch Trio at Crooners, Patty and the Buttons at the Aster, Robert Everest at Maria's.  A mid-afternoon delight at the Icehouse features Charanga Tropical, Doug Little's ensemble that turned ears in Havana a few months ago.

Come evening, enjoy the gospel-inflected jazz and blues of Ginger Commodore and her GCQ (quartet) with Lee Blaske, Mark Weisberg and Bobby Commodore at the Dakota. Or head over to the Riverview Wine Bar for an evening with the Zacc Harris Trio.

Monday, October 12. Saxophonist and educator Scott Johnson gets his night in the spotlight at Jazz Central as the Monday featured artist.

Cherry Spoon Collective*
At the Black Dog, the edgy experimental ensemble Cherry Spoon Collective launches a mini-season, featuring new commissions and improvisations. Led by Michelle Kinney (cello), Nick Gaudette (bass) and Patrick O'Keefe (sax), the ensemble includes Laura Harada, Melissa Mathews and Zack Kline (violins), Jacqueline Ultan (cello), Graham O’Brien (drums), Chris Thompson,  George Cartwright and Lee Tran (saxes), Trent Jacobs (bassoon), Chris Cunningham (guitar), Joe Horton (spoken word), Geoff Senn (trumpet), and Mike Ethen (trombone).

Charmin Michelle
At the Dakota, it's Foodie Night, meaning no cover, which makes the music a real bargain-- and tonight it's Charmin and Shapira and Friends. The expanded edition of the long-running voice/guitar duo of Charmin Michelle and Joel Shapira, this quintet swings every step of the way.

As always on Monday night, JT Bates presents his Jazz Implosion, tonight pitting JT in a "Meat Raffle" with young drummer Cory Healey for an evening of "drums and electronics, solos and duos."

Tuesday, October 13.  The monthly Chris Olson Project at the Black Dog features guitarist Olson dueling with cellist Greg Byers.

Rhonda Laurie
At Vieux Carré, Chris Lomheim opens the evening with sublime solo piano, followed by savvy vocalist Rhonda Laurie and her quartet-- Rick Carlson on piano, Steve Pikal on bass and Gary Schulte on violin.

And out in Fridley at Crooners, it's Tuesday's Instrumental Jazz Night with the Phil Hey Quartet, one of the longest-running ensembles in town with Dave Hagedorn on vibes, Phil Aaron on piano, and Tom Lewis on bass. If the Modern Jazz Quartet could be reincarnated.... well, maybe they are.

Phil Hey
Wednesday, October 14. One of Minnesota's finest pays tribute to one of jazz's legends as Debbie Duncan salutes the 100th birthday of Billie Holiday at Crooners. While Debbie is far more likely to make you laugh than would Lady Day, she also possess the emotional range to guarantee honoring Billie while never letting you forget she's Debbie.
Debbie Duncan

A special intimate evening at Creation Audio tonight features Red Planet, that out-of-orbit trio of Dean Magraw, Chris Bates and Jay Epstein, and special guest Bill Carrothers. Carrothers last performed with Red Planet about 6-7 years ago, so this is a long-overdue reunion. The guys will be recording at Creation and a very lucky, small audience will get a preview in the studio. Seating is limited and any remaining tickets are available only online.
Bill Carrothers

Amina Figarova
Thursday, October 15. It's been a few years since the Amina Figarova Sextet came to down, and now with a new recording, the band returns to the Dakota. Based for years in Rotterdam, the Azerbaijan native recently relocated to New York, but maintains her mainly European cohorts on tour and on recording. This is a band that built its reputation playing original repertoire, their signature interplay trumping the stellar individual soloists. Pianist and composer Amina is among the top echelon of composers and bandleaders in modern jazz.

Joel Shapira
It's a big band night at Vieux Carré, with Joel Shapira solo guitar opening for the Twin Cities Latin Jazz Orchestra, an 18-piece ensemble of top metro players led by Geoff Senn and Mac Santiago. And at Hell's Kitchen, the Wolverines Trio teams up with one of their long-time favorites, Maud Hixson.

Laura Caviani and her Trio -- multiple gigs this week!

© Andrea Canter
The frost is on the pumpkin, leaves are falling, and jazz is buzzing all over the Metro. It's a full week of local veterans in varying combinations and some young cats from Oberlin highlighting the local scene.

Joyce Lyons
Friday, October 16. A fine voice that gets too little attention around town, Joyce Lyons and her usual crew (Phil Aaron, Graydon Peterson) help you chill out at Parma 8200. In Lowertown St Paul, a young voice getting more and more attention lately entertains at the SW Crafthouse (Senor Wong) -- Katia Cardenas pays hommage to Ella as well as more modern jazz and pop.

Eric Gravatt
At the Black Dog, "chill" with some heat from the monthly Donald Washington Trio gig, with the Wise Man of saxophone on the bandstand with son Kevin on drums and special guest on more saxophones, Jimmie Wallace. Another local icon, drummer Eric Kamau Gravatt returns to Jazz Central with his long-running Source Code, currently featuring Dave Graf and Solomon Parham on horns and Ron Evaniuk on bass.

JT Bates
Vieux Carré hosts an early evening of duo finery with Jeremy Walker, then moves into less civilized territory with Grain, the new B-3 organ trio from drummer JT Bates, with Kevin Gastonguay on organ and Zacc Harris on guitar.

Dean Granros
Friday Night Jazz at the Nicollet also brings together some exciting veterans, with Davu Seru on drums, Chris Bates on bass and legendary Dean Granros on guitar (Seru/Bates/Granros).

Yolande Bruce
At Crooners, it's old times with Judi (Donaghy) Vinar singing and swinging with the Wolverines Quartet, while the latest installment of the Eight O'Clock Jump series at Walker West features the Yolande Bruce Group. This concert may be sold out but check with Walker West.

Laura Caviani
Saturday, October 17. The first of several opportunities this week to hear the Laura Caviani Trio with special guest, Portland-based drummer Todd Strait. Todd is an old cohort of Laura's, one of her Kansas City connections through Karrin Allyson. Now in Portland, Todd appeared on Laura's recording, Going There. Tonight the trio (with Steve Pikal on bass) helps raise funds for Habitat for Humanity in concert at Plymouth Congregational Church in south Minneapolis. (See more gigs, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday).

Adam Linz
Saturday Night Jazz at the Black Dog features a tantalizing double header. Things start cooking with a new string duo-- Peter Susag on bassand Greg Byers on cello. (Greg was the first cello graduate of the University of Miami's famed jazz program.) The heat will be further cranked up for the second round as bassist Adam Linz's Le Percheronmakes its Black Dog debut, previewing music from their forthcoming vinyl release. Adam will be joined by young vibes master Levi Schwartzberg, trumpeter Noah Ophoven-Baldwin, and drummer Cory Healey.

Maryann Sullivan's Corner Jazz
Veteran vocalist Maurice Jacox returns to the Normandy Kitchen with his trio, while at Crooners, vocalist Patty Peterson brings along some "new" friends, bassist Mark Weisberg and guitarist Wayne Cullinan, along with nephew Jason Peterson DeLaire on keys and sax. JoAnn Funk and Jeff Brueske fill the Lobby Bar of the Saint Paul Hotel with classic and more modern fare, while Maryann Sullivan's Corner Jazz performs in the lounge at Public Kitchen.

Andrew Walesch
Sunday, October 18. The usual suspects for jazz brunch-- The Andrew Walesch Trio with Gordy Johnson and Jay Epstein preside at Crooners; Patty and the Buttons swing at the Aster; and Robert Everest puts a touch of Brazil on the Mexican menu at Maria's.

This evening, trumpeter Solomon Parham is back at The Bedlam with Solomon's Sessions, a jam session with young cohorts from McNally Smith College of Music.

Junior Ranger*
Monday, October 19.  An unusually long night of music at the Icehouse: An early start features Junior Ranger, a quartet of Oberlin Conservatory jazz students including two Minneapolis South High alums, trumpeter Joe Suihkonen and drummer Emerson Hunton. With guitarist Noah Gershwin and pianist Eric Krouse, Joe and Emerson raised funds to travel to Amsterdam last spring to study Dutch improvisation, and will soon release a recording inspired by that experience. They will be followed by JT's weekly Jazz Implosion, which tonight is the CD release for the intriguing Fall of the House of Usher. Notes band member Chris Bates re the CD, Icehouse and Elsewhere, "Recorded over several gigs at Icehouse and a few other places, this is an expansive live set from the band. Chris Cunningham, Greg Schutte, Nathan Hanson, Cole Pulice, Jon Davis, Elliot Wachs, Adrian Larkin, Ivan Cunningham, Chris Bates, Adam Svec and special guests will bring the slip-sync grooves to you for two big sets!"
Steve Kenny
Laura Caviani's trio with Graydon Peterson and Todd Strait will present a workshop at Schmitt Music in Edina on jazz piano ensemble performance. Over at Crooners, Doug Haining and his Twin Cities Seven, with vocalist Maryann Sullivan, perform on their monthly Monday slot. And at Jazz Central, trumpeter and curator Steve Kenny shines in the "featured artist" slot.

Tuesday, October 20. The Laura Caviani Trio makes its debut at Crooners on the Tuesday instrumental jazz night, with Graydon Peterson and Portland, OR drummer Todd Strait.  At Vieux Carré, Dan Musselman plays some inventive solo piano during the early evening, followed by the Zacc Harris Trio.

Katia Cardenas
And it's Foodie Night at the Dakota, with vocalist Katia Cardenas and her band, featuring Todd Godbout on piano, Andrew Foreman on bass, Zach Schmidt on drums and special guest Jason Weisman on sax. It's the one-year "Dakota-versary" for the young singer who has become a regular presence on Foodie Nights. The Explosion Big Band, led by Doug Haining and Dave Graf, takes their usual place on Big Band Tuesday at Jazz Central.

Chris Lomheim
Wednesday, October 21. We're used to hearing pianist Chris Lomheim in solo or with his trio, but tonight at Jazz Central, Chris expands his team to a quintet, with Pete Whitman on sax, Adam Rossmiller on trumpet, Jay Young on bass and Dave Schmalenberger on drums.

Thursday, October 22.  The original Charmin and Shapira Duo return to Jazz Central tonight as part of the Vocal Jazz series. And a younger duo, pianist Joe Strachan and bassist Ted Olsen, open the evening at Vieux Carré.

A new youth series, local veterans and some stellar visitors-- just another typical jazz week in the Twin Cities, full of difficult choices but you can't really go wrong here!

Will Schmid
Friday, October 23. Friday Night Jazz at The Nicollet branches out in collaboration with JazzINK to present (monthly) an opening set from a prodigious ensemble of young talents. Tonight the Will Schmid New Quintet kicks off the JazzINK Youth Showcase, featuring guitarist Will (a senior at Minnetonka High School) and four good friends. Will already has enough gigging experience to have a "new" quintet!

No Room for Squares
After the 7 pm start, the "usual" Friday Night gig at 9 will feature No Room for Squares, a hard swinging bebop quintet featured at the 2015 Twin Cities Jazz Festival. Headed by drummer Bill Stieger, the band includes a who's who of local bop masters--Jon Pemberton, Jimmie Wallace, Mikkel Romstad and Adam Tucker.

Levi Schwartzberg
A double-header at Jazz Central also boasts back to back bands -- young talents and slightly older talents, clear proof of the vitality and impending longevity of the local jazz scene. Start out with the Levi Schwartzberg Combo with the 4-mallet master and U of M student leading a band of like-minded hipsters (Thomas Strommen on sax, DeCarlo Jackson on trumpet, Drew Stinson on bass and Joey Hayes on drums).

Cameron Kinghorn
In the late slot, it's BDP (aka Baldwin/Kinghorn) with the double trumpet threat of Jake Baldwin and Cameron Kinghorn, who splits his time between horn and vocals, along with Ted Godbout on keys, Andrew Foreman on bass and Andres Crovetti on drums.

At The Cedar, Zacc Harris and Chris Bates --the ultimate string duo--open for Jordanian vocalist Farah Siraj and her global quintet playing "Arabian Flamenco Jazz."In Bloomington, sultry Sophia Shorai serenades at Parma 8200. And Joel Shapira starts a busy weekend, tonight at the Public Kitchen.

Greg Schutte (JelloSlave)
Saturday, October 24. Hosmer Library in south Minneapolis has held a series of free afternoon concerts for a number of years, and there's always a few that appeal to jazz fans. Like this afternoon when the edgy JelloSlave ensemble performs its magic, with the amazing musicianship of cellists Michelle Kinney and Jacqueline Ultan, tabla expert Marc Anderson, and drummer Greg Schutte.

The Icehouse typically presents a jazz duo over the dinner hours on weekends, and tonight's offering is among the best-- Bryan Nichols on piano with Billy Peterson on bass. (And the food is pretty terrific as well!)

Joel Shapira
At the Black Dog, the Saturday Night Jazz Series again presents back-to-back local stars. The Joel Shapira Trio kicks off at 7 pm, with guitarist Joel and pals, bassist Tom Pieper and drummer Eric Gravatt. Pieper stays on stage for the prime time sets with the Illicit Sextet (Steve Kenny, Paul Harper, Chris Lomheim, Dave Roos and Nathan Norman), presenting music from a forthcoming recording. It will be their third album in 20 years, adding Chapter Thirteen to Chapter One and Chapter Eleven.

Pippi Ardennia
Vocalist Pippi Ardennia has long been a champion of jazz education and "learning by doing" -- putting young musicians on stage with veterans to "sink or swim," and of course they swim! Tonight Pippi celebrates her birthday with a fund-raising bash to benefit her PipJazz Foundation and the Bedlam Theater, at Bedlam with music from the Kronick Quintet and the latest crop of PipJazz All-Stars.

What might be the first-ever Minneapolis High School Jazz Festivalbrings together bands from four city schools--South, Southwest, Washburn and Roosevelt-- along with the JazzMN Orchestra, with a free evening concert at South High.

*Kate Lynch
At Vieux Carré, bassist/vocalist Kate Lynch and Her Most Excellent Fellows present popular songs from the first half of the 20th century, including works associated with Ella, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Nat King Cole and Ethel Waters. And the "fellows" include Chris Beaty (guitar), Ken Chastain (drums and vocals), Greg Lewis (trumpet and flute) and Michael Nelson (trombone).

JoAnn Funk
Benny Weinbeck continues his weekly gig at Parma 8200 (usually with Gordy Johnson and Phil Hey), while JoAnn Funk and Jeff Brueske keep their long-running Saturday night gig going in the Lobby Bar of the Saint Paul Hotel.

Sunday, October 25. The usual weekly jazz brunchers include the Andrew Walsesch Trio at Crooners, Patty and the Buttons at the Aster, and Robert Everest at Maria's. Late afternoon finds Joel Shapira-- again --at the Black Dog, this time playing a sublime solo guitar.

Benny Green
It's been a while since Oscar Peterson protegé and now-veteran swinger Benny Green has been in the Twin Cities, a fact that will be rectified with his trio gig at the Dakota tonight. Benny is in town for a jazz piano workshop and combo clinic, so he should be warmed up and ready to shower the Dakota stage with his trademark energy, keeping good company with bassist David Wong and drummer (no relation) Rodney Green. Benny was last at the Dakota with guitar legend Bucky Pizzarelli.

And it's Dance Time at Cinema Ballroom, where the Jerry O'Hagan Orchestra with vocalist Charmin Michelle recreate the golden age of ballroom dancing.

Andres Crovetti
Monday, October 26. At Jazz Central, drummer Andres Crovetti takes the spotlight and leads the following jam session. He's often on stage with Adam Meckler, Jana Nyberg, Jake Baldwin and more.

JT's Jazz Implosion hosts one his favorite touring bands, the Glimpse Trio featuring locally-based drummer Martin Dosh along with San Francisco-based guitarist Mike Sopko and drummer Hamir Atwal. Hamir was last at Icehouse with the great clarinet player Ben Goldberg. Sure to be a high energy show.

Jane Monheit
Tuesday, October 27. It's an almost annual event to have vocalist Jane Monheit at the Dakota. A media sensation since her first recording, Monheit has matured into a sultry, sometimes sassy, pitch-perfect singer who sometimes stretches the definition of "jazz singer" (teetering on the pop boundary) but never loses her jazz sensibilities. Her recent tour has included music from her Hello Bluebird album (dedicated to Judy Garland) and songs from male singers and composers who have been sources of inspiration throughout her career.

Connie Evingston
There's another accomplished vocalist across town at Vieux Carré where Connie Evingson rules the stage, following some opening solo piano from the stunning Chris Lomheim. And even without a vocalist, the Benny Weinbeck Trio (with Gordy Johnson and Phil Hey) commands attention, tonight breaking away from their usual Saturday night gig to perform on the Tuesday Night Instrumental Jazz series at Crooners.

It's Big Band night at Jazz Central, and the Twin Cities Latin Jazz Orchestra takes its turn in monthly rotation. The band blew the lid off Vieux Carré last week and now they are back "home" to lift the basement ceiling at JC.

If you are in the Duluth Area, saxophonist Kim Richmond guest stars with the UMD jazz ensemble.

Greg Byers
Wednesday, October 28. Fresh off his duo with Peter Susag at the Black Dog, jazz cellist/composer Greg Byerscomes to Jazz Central on "new music" night, and for sure, his music will be new. Few musicians play with such overt passion as Greg.

NOLA style traditionalists the Southside Aces bring their infectious enthusiasm to Crooners tonight, and you can be sure there will be a space cleared for dancing.

*Emily Green
Thursday, October 29. By day she's a cracker-jack real estate agent, but come evening Emily Green turns to song, and tonight she could ask for no better company than husband Chris Lomheim as they take the stage for Vocal Jazz Night at Jazz Central.

Charmin Michelle
Yet another gig--Joel Shapira plays the opening sets at Vieux Carré, then heads over to the Black Dog to join Charmin Michelle in their longstanding duo, Charmin and Shapira.

More Jazz!

Along with assorted ghosts and goblins, we have some of the area's best jazz musicians delivering their own tricks and treats this week.

Big Gigs This Week
Denny Malmberg
Friday, October 30. Tonight (and tomorrow night), start your evening at Crooners where accordionist/keyboardist Denny Malmberg plays the Happy Hour sets-- featuring polkas!Dinner sets at the Icehouse tonight feature the sublime duo of Bryan Nichols (piano) and James Buckley(bass).

At Jazz Central, the trio was initially scheduled as Hipster Farm Supply, and now they are the Basement Society.Whatever the band is called, it will be three hipsters playing in the basement! The trio is led by drummer Pete James Johnson with pianist Javi Santiago and Boston-groomed bassist Dan Carpel.

Battle Cat
At the Nicollet, it's the return of Battle Cat, a once-popular trio that that went dormant for 3 years before reappearing during the 2015 Twin Cities Jazz Festival. The band includes guitarist Park Evans, bassist Cody McKinney and drummer Greg Schutte, "playing original music informed by jazz, rock, West African and Caribbean music, and re-imagined arrangements from the jazz canon."

Jeremy Walker
The double feature at Vieux Carré starts out with the Jeremy Walker Duo (the hip pianist usually paired with bassist Jeff Brueske) before yielding the stage to the soulful Ginger Commodore Quartet (Sean Turner, Mark Weisberg and Bobby Commodore).

Arne Fogel
Tonight, Arne goes to Hell! Crooner and jazz historian Arne Fogelis back at Hell's Kitchen on Halloween Eve, most likely with a few pals from the Wolverines. Perhaps he will be wearing his Bing Crosby mask?

At the Black Dog, enjoy Radio Joe and the Jazz Bos, featuring the vibraphone artistry of "Maestro" Bruce Wintervold on vibraphone, "Radio Joe" Demko on guitar and vocals, Keith Boyles on bass, and Tony Guscetti on drums, and playing retro swing, boogie woogie and jump blues.

Will Schmid
Saturday, October 31. The weekly Saturday Night Jazz at the Black Dog features the usual double bill, tonight kicking off with the young talents of the Will Schmid Trio (Will on guitar, Alma Engebretson on bass and Simon Petrick on drums). These three high school students formed 60% of the Will Schmid New Quintet which dazzled a full house at The Nicollet last week. They'll warm up the stage for the veteran explorers, How Birds Work (Dean Granros, Peter Schimke, Chris Bates and Kenny Horst), covering great inspirational works from the likes of Coltrane and Shorter as well as originals.

Jeff Brueske and JoAnn Funk
Dinner sets at the Icehouse again feature bassist James Buckley, this evening paired with eclectic guitarist Tim Sparks. The Benny Weinbeck Trio (with Gordy Johnson and Phil Hey) play their weekly gig at Parma 8200, while JoAnn Funk and Jeff Brueske meet you in the Lobby Bar of the Saint Paul Hotel, their Saturday night home for the past seven years.

The ever-swinging Patty and the Buttons, led by accordionist/vocalist Patrick "Patty" Harison, take over Vieux Carré, matching the decor and menu with their NOLA-influenced brand of musical fun.

Andrew Walesch
Sunday, November 1. Remember--set your clocks back an hour! You don't want to miss jazz brunch at Crooners (Andrew Walesch Trio) or at the Aster (Patty and the Buttons) or at Maria's (Robert Everest). Or the Cuban rhythms of  Charanga Tropical and their mostly monthly, no-cover afternoon set at the Icehouse. Or the weekly Sunday night special at the Riverview Wine Bar-- the Zacc Harris Trio, one of the longest-running gigs in town.

Steve Blons, Soul Cafe
And you don't want to miss the long-awaited return of Soul Cafe, back in their original guitar-sax-piano configuration with Steve Blons, Brad Holden and Steven Hobert, who replaces Laura Caviani at the keyboard. Tonight they explore the theme of "Ripening: Ages and Stages," music paired with poetry readings and a visual arts display in the Art Gallery of the Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church.

Lowell Pickett
At the Dakota, where the club is celebrating its 30th anniversary year, enjoy a no-cover 2016 Preview Party, with music provided by the Jordan Anderson-Adam Astrupduo (teen pianist and guitarist who will blow your socks off), followed by the Debbie Duncan Quintet, along with a video presentation of upcoming shows by Lowell Pickett.

Monday, November 2. Crooners Lounge hosts the Acme Jazz Company, a big band featuring one of the nation's largest selections of original charts. Earlier, vocalist/pianist Andrew Walesch starts his four nights of Happy Hour.

At the Dakota, a Foodie Night with the Travis Anderson Trio(with Steve Pikal and Nathan Norman) boasts what is surely one of the nation's largest selections of crazy antics on the bandstand.

Dave King
At the Icehouse, JT's Jazz Implosion presents two off-the-edge ensembles, starting with the Real Bulls of percussion, Dave King and JT Bates, going stick to stick in a royal battle. They will be followed (if the stage is still standing) by the Enormous Quartet, with Chris Thomson on sax, Park Evans on guitar, Chris Bates on bass, and Joey Van Phillips on drums.

Tuesday, November 3. It's the First Tuesday which means Dean Magraw and Davu Seru wreak havoc at the Black Dog, while at Jazz Central, its the monthly rotation for the Bill Simenson Orchestra, featuring a who's who list of the area's big band greats.

Mary Louise Knutson
Piano rules at Vieux Carré, with Mary Louise Knutson flying solo followed by the Travis Anderson Trio, just flying! At Crooners, Tuesday Instrumental Jazz night features world-renowned guitarist Tim Sparks and his trio.

Wednesday, November 4. At Crooners, Gary Rue and his Rat Pack band celebrate the great male singers (Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Chet Baker, Nat King Cole).

Jana Nyberg
Thursday, November 5. Jazz vocal night at Jazz Central features Jana Nyberg (Meckler), a singer who can as easily cover Ella Fitzgerald as Bonnie Raitt. At Crooners, Maud Hixson and Rick Carlsontake the stage, "In the Crook."Jon Pemberton (on piano) leads off the night at Vieux Carré, followed by the traditions of New Orleans and beyond from the Southside Aces.

It's sort of a jazz fest at Groundswell coffee shop in St Paul, with three bands tonight-- Cory Healey's Beautiful Sunshine Band, Graham O'Brien, and the Noah Ophoven-Baldwin/Cole Pulice duo.

Laura Caviani and Dave Milne
And the University of Wisconsin-River Falls' RADD Jazz Series (Abbott Concert Hall) presents Laura Caviani in the first of two concerts. Tonight it's a duo with UWRF Jazz Professor Dave Milne, presenting "Jazz Impressions" of classical works, from Debussy, Faure, Ravel, Schuman and more, along with some Brubeck and Caviani originals.

Still no hard frost? Perhaps the heat of the local jazz scene is keeping winter at bey! Probably we can not hope for many more relatively warm days, but we can surely count on a string of hot nights thanks to gigs, concerts, mini-fests and CD releases in the Twin Cities in the coming week!

Big Gigs This Week
Graydon Peterson
Friday, November 6. Over the past decade, since completing studies at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Graydon Peterson has been one of the go-to bassists, and more recently, bandleaders, in the Twin Cities area. There's few musical directions he won't go, but his talents as a composer and bandleader of modern inventive chamber jazz is a clear strength. Tonight he celebrates the release of his quartet's second recording, and the format alone stands out -- every track is a duet! Graydon wrote nine compositions for every permutation of pairings of his quartet plus guest artist Vinnie Rose, who was a member of the original GPQ. Guitar was later replaced by piano (Joe Strachan), with original quartet members Adam Meckler (trumpet) and Adrian Suarez (drums) filling out the duets. Aptly titled "Duets," the recording is the core of the program on Friday Night Jazz at The Nicollet.

Honoring their pal Graydon Peterson's gig at The Nicollet, Jazz Central Studios is deferring its start time til 10 pm tonight when it's College Night, hosted by North Central University Jazz Workshop students and leader Peter Shu. It's part gig and part jam session, showcasing the talents of some of the area's top jazz students.

Bruce Henry
Bruce Henryrelocated to Chicago about 7 years ago but has never lost his sense of direction--he finds his way back to the Twin Cities at least a few times each year for private and public performances. He'll charm the crowd at Crooners tonight with his mix of bop, swing, soul and blues.

Madeleine Peyroux
Parma 8200 deviates from its usual vocal night for an evening with the Joel Shapira Trio-- Shapira on guitar with Pete Whitman (sax) and Tom Lewis (bass) -- or 75% of his new quartet, Bottomless Pit. And it isa vocal night at the Dakota with the return of Madeleine Peyroux, currently touring in celebration of Keep Me in Your Heart for a While: The Best of Madeleine Peyroux, her debut anthology.

Jay Young
And another opportunity to enjoy Jay Young and the Lyric Factory, this time at Vieux Carré for "Bandwidth: Compilations," a reprise of their recent shows of "Top Ten Hits" including Sting, Babyface, Steely Dan, Cyndi Lauper, The Beatles, even Monk and McCoy Tyner. Jay will be playing piccolo bass with son Ian on bas, Thom West on keys, Ernest Bisong on violin and Kevin Washington on drums. Come early for "Daddy Squeeze"Dan Newton on solo accordion.

Maud Hixson and Arne Fogel
Friday-Sunday, November 6-8. They're at it again! Arne Fogel and Maud Hixson start their three-show run of "Irving Berlin's Hollywood" at the Bloomington Center for the Arts' Black Box Theater, with evenings Friday and Saturday and a matinee on Sunday. With Rick Carlson directing the music, they'll sing their way through Berlin's great tunes that enlivened Hollywood films, including "Cheek to Cheek,""White Christmas,""Puttin' On the Ritz,""A Couple of Swells,""Change Partners," and "Let's Face the Music and Dance."

Saturday, November 7. Start your jazz action early with the dazzling vocal/guitar duo, Charmin and Shapira,in the Midtown Global Market atrium early in the afternoon, and wish Charmin Michelle well as she heads to France for some touring later in the week.

Babatunde Lea
The Saturday Night Jazz at the Black Dog series presents a double-header every weekend, often featuring veteran artists in new configurations as well as long-running ensembles. Tonight, guitarist David Roos'Exquisite Corps trio (with Peter Susag on bass, Eron Woods on drums) opens at 7 pm, followed by a new edition of the Babatunde Lea Quartet. World renowned percussionist Lea joins forces with Zacc Harris, Chris Bates and Phil Aaron for an evening that will be as much fun to watch as listen.

At the Dakota, contemporary sax star Steve Cole returns for two sets, featuring local songbird Patty Peterson, while Jazz @ St. Barneys again features trad piano hero Butch Thompson, this time in the fine swinging company of clarinetist Tony Balluff and bassist Steve Pikal.

Reynold Philipsek
One of the most prolific recording artists as well as composers among local musicians, guitarist Reynold Philipsek celebrates yet another recording tonight, Duets, with frequent partner, bassist Matt Senjem.  They're at Reynold's favorite haunt, the 318 Cafe in Excelsior.

Regular features: The Benny Weinbeck Trio (with Gordy Johnson and Phil Hey) take over the lounge at Parma 8200; JoAnn Funk and Jeff Brueskebring their piano/voice and bass duo back to the Lobby Bar of the Saint Paul Hotel.

Jon Weber
Sunday, November 8.  Vocalist Connie Evingson's"Jazz at the Jungle" series will again put Connie and pianist Jon Weber together at the Jungle Theater for two shows celebrating the roots of the "American Songbook"--blues, roots, folk, ragtime, country, Tin Pan Alley and jazz. Expert support will be provided by accordionist Patrick Harison and bassist Gordy Johnson. (Note 4 pm show sold out!)

Paul Renz
At the Dakota, guitar master Paul Renz brings his quartet to the stage, a warm-up to their East Coast tour. Paul's team includes Wes Ruelle on piano, Jonathan Thomas on bass, and Jessie Lesmeister on drums.

Monday, November 9.Joey DeFrancesco is the undisputed reigning King of the B-3 organ, and he returns to the Dakota tonight with his Chicago-based trio of Jeff Parker on guitar and George Fludas on drums. They're celebrating the release (this weekend) of Trip Mode.
Joey D

Good vibes will waft up from the basement at Jazz Central when Steve Kimmel is featured, with reeds and bass from Larry Hillman and Margo Hillman, respectively.

Smooth and savvy vocalist Thomas Bruce headlines at Crooners Lounge, and savvy but probably more rough and tumble will be onstage for JT's Jazz Implosion at the Icehouse with host JT on drums and Casey O'Brien on bass, with some geeky electronics ("drones and trances") passing between them.

Tuesday, November 10.  Big Band Night brings the Cedar Avenue Big Band back to Jazz Central for their monthly blowout. Another hot big band, the Nova Jazz Orchestra, plays at the Minnesota Music Cafe.

Phil Aaron
At Vieux Carré, it's a reunion of the Phil Aaron Trio, the original configuration that once played at the Hotel Sofitel. Joining the keyboard giant will be bassist Gary Raynor and drummer Jay Epstein. And speaking of keyboard giants, the opening sets will feature solo piano from Chris Lomheim.

Another giant of local jazz piano who tours these days with Doc Severinsen, Mary Louise Knutson makes her debut at Crooners on the Tuesday Night Instrumental Jazz series. Her trio includes the best-- Gordy Johnson on bass and Phil Hey on drums.

Chris Bates
Wednesday, November 11. Once per month, bassist Chris Bates hosts an improvisational music night at Jazz Central, and tonight he joins fellow explorers Javi Santiago (piano) and Cory Healey (drums) as the CB Trio. According to Chris, the band will be "exploring the inner workings of the piano trio format through original compositions and choice vehicles of classic eras gone by."

Andrew Walesch
Thursday, November 12. Young crooner, pianist and bandleader Andrew Walesch brings his 10-piece band and "100 Years of Sinatra" celebration to the Dakota. Perhaps best known these days for his frequent gigs at Crooners, including the weekly Sunday Jazz Brunch, Walesch recently sang with the JazzMN Orchestra.

On the Vocal Jazz Night at Jazz Central, Cameron Kinghorn sets aside his trumpet to sing with his quartet-- Ted Godbout on piano, Andrew Foreman on bass and Andres Crovetti on drums. His voice is rich and soulful... much like his horn.

At Vieux Carré, guitarist Joel Shapira starts things off before yielding the stage to the bluesy soul voice of Erica West.

Steve Kenny
And at Studio Z, it's the first of the three-night Zeitgeist New Music Cabaret, with multiple ensembles each night. Tonight: Things begin (each night) with a Young Performer Showcase set, followed by Marimba Bullies, Zeitgeist, and Steve Kenny's Wise Quartet. (See the websitefor the full schedule.)

We're starting to see holiday ads and decorations, so we might as well getting into the spirit of the season--and there's plenty of jazz to add to the celebrations. This week brings the final two nights of the Zeitgeist New Music Cabaret with jazz, global music, and genre-defying new works at Studio Z; more great music on the Friday Night Jazz at the Nicollet and Saturday Night Jazz at the Black Dog series; the next installment of the 8 O'Clock Jump series at Walker West with Eric Gravatt; the return of fabled violinist Regina Carter and her Southern Comfort Project at the Dakota; the debut of the Adam Meckler Orchestra at Vieux Carré; and that's just a start on the list.

Big Gigs This Week
Arne Fogel
Friday, November 13. It would seem there's nothing but good luck on this Friday the 13th! JoAnn Funk and Jeff Brueske signal the holiday season by returning to Friday nights (along with Saturdays) in the Lobby Bar of the Saint Paul Hotel. The crooning jazz historian Arne Fogel takes his turn at Parma 8200 with Chris Lomheim and Steve Pikal in joyful support, while Bryan Nichols and James Buckley entertain over the dinner hours at the Icehouse and world music grooves take the stage with Axis Mundi at Hell's Kitchen. And Crooners Lounge features the Debbie Duncan Quartet with Minnesota's "First Lady of Song," following Happy Hour entertainment from singer/pianist/humorist Lori Dokken.

Jordan Anderson
Friday Night Jazz at The Nicollet hosts the JazzINK Youth Showcase(7 pm), this month spotlighting the Jordan Anderson Quartet. 17-year-old pianist Jordan was on stage last month when the Will Schmid Quintet performed on the Showcase, and tonight it's most of that ensemble with Jordan-- saxophonist Gerhardt Robinson, bassist Alma Engebretson, and drummer Simon Petrick, four of the most talented and engaging teen jazzers around.  It's a hard act to follow but the funky fusionists Rare Medium are up to the challenge, playing the headline sets at 9 pm.

Over at Jazz Central, it's a rare appearance by the Charlie Christenson Five-- "a ragtag group of amateur comedians, political activists, college professors, traveling salesmen and European jazz enthusiasts" as well as accomplished musicians. The band includes Charlie--who heads the Voice Department at McNally Smith-- on keys and vocals, Adam Meckler on trumpet, Patrick Horigan on guitar and keys, Katie Marshall on guitar and vocals, and Matt Edlund on drums.

Eric Gravatt
The Walker West 8 O'Clock Jump concert series continues with Eric Gravatt and Source Code, which tonight will feature Chris Thomson, Solomon Parham, Dean Magraw, Ron Evaniuk and Eric. This series has already presented Nicole Mitchell, Ron Carter and Yolande Bruce, and the 2016 line-up will be announced soon. It's a small performance space so call or go online now for tickets.

Atlantis Quartet
The Atlantis Quartet, coming off a short vacation, returns to Vieux Carré, and tonight they help celebrate Chris Bates' birthday as well as the birth of Brandon Wozniak's daughter. Soon they will also have a new CD to celebrate. Jeremy Walker and Anthony Cox start out with some cool duo sets.

Dave Hagedorn
The second night of the Zeitgeist New Music Cabaret features the voice/sax duo of Allyssa Anderson and Jeffrey Kyle Hutchins, the Zeigeist ensemble, and the Dave Hagedorn Quartet (Dave Milne , Chris Bates and Phil Hey), all performing new works at Studio Z.

Lucia Sarmiento
Saturday, November 14. The double-header at the Black Dog (Saturday Night Jazz series) is a McNally Smith affair, with most of the musicians having student and/or faculty ties to the St. Paul music school: First up, a voice/guitar duo dubbed Tempestad (Maria Vejdani and Tomás Simpson), followed by the Gerard Ahlgren Quintet led by trumpeter Algren with a crew of very able past and current students -- Lucia Sarmiento on sax, Kelly Blau on guitar, Ry Dill on bass and Lars Johnson on drums. This is Ahlgren's Black Dog debut, but we've heard most of these musicians in other contexts including the McNally X-Tet, Breaking Brass, Lucia's Quintet, etc.

Solomon Parham
At Studio Z, it's the finale of the Zeitgeist New Music Cabaret, featuring an ensemble led by trumpeter Solomon Parham, the Zeitgeist ensemble, and Gao Hong performing original works on the Chinese pipa in collaboration with sound designers.

Travis Anderson
The Travis Anderson Trio returns to the Normandy Kitchen, Nachito Herreraholds his monthly firestorm at the Dakota, Benny Weinbeck and his intrepid trio (Gordy Johnson and Phil Hey) perform in the lounge at Parma 8200, the Talking Stringstake over the Loring Pasta Bar; Tim Sparks and James Buckley hold a string fest over the dinner hours at the Icehouse, followed by a return engagement with the young trombone duo, the Potash Twins.

Patrick Harison (Patty and the Buttons)
Sunday, November 15. Jazz Brunch is easy to find -- Patty and the Buttons at the Aster, the Andrew Walesch Trio at Crooners, Robert Everest at Maria's. Later in the day, Solomon Parham hosts his Sessions at the Bedlam, the Zacc Harris Trio prevails at the Riverview Wine Bar.

Regina Carter
Monday, November 16. It's been a few years since master jazz violinist Regina Carter has been in the Twin Cities, and now she's back with her Southern Comfort ensemble for two sets at the Dakota. Featuring folk tunes and newer compositions that honor her grandfather's southern roots, the MacArthur "genius grant" recipient makes the violin sing in the key of jazz on each of her diverse projects, and her bands always include the best artists on the scene.

Jake Baldwin
At the Icehouse, JT's Jazz Implosion features BDP, led by trumpeters Jake Baldwin and Cameron Kinghorn, with Kinghorn also providing vocals, with Ted Godbout on keys, Andrew Foreman on bass and Andres Crovetti on drums. Young lions ripping through the jazz jungle!

At Jazz Central, the spotlight shines on Berklee-trained drummer/multi-instrumentalist Rodney Rocques, aka Rodney Ruckus, and his Ruckus Quintet. After completing college studies, Rodney hit the road with the likes of Tia Fuller, Herbie Hancock, Billy Childs and more.

And at the Black Dog, it's another night with the Cherry Spoon Collective, an area experimental music ensemble led by Michelle Kinney (cello), Nick Guadette (bass) and Patrick O’Keefe (sax), along with a revolving cast of the best of Twin Cities improvisers.

There's good music for a good cause tonight at the Jungle Theater, where vocalist Connie Evingson teams up with the swinging Patty and the Buttons in a fundraiser ("20/20") for Angel Flight, a charity organization that provides volunteer pilots and planes to transport individuals to access critical medical care. Tickets and information at www.afc2020.eventbrite.com

Adam Meckler Orchestra
Tuesday, November 17. Move the tables and chairs, the Adam Meckler Orchestra will take over much of the central space at Vieux Carré! The AMO has been rather quiet lately as leader Adam has been on the road, recording with his quintet and adjusting to fatherhood, but they're back in full sound with 18 of the area's finest, and many among the area's youngest, jazz artists. The setlist features all original music. Guitarist Joel Shapira goes solo for the early evening sets.

In Minneapolis, the Explosion Big Band, led by Doug Haining and Scott Agster, offers another opportunity to enjoy the area's finest big band players on Jazz Central's weekly Big Band night.

Tommy O'Donnell
At Crooners Lounge, Tuesday Instrumental Jazz Night features the return of the Tommy O'Donnell Trio with Gordy Johnson and Phil Hey, a sublime and swinging piano band that should be a perfect match to the fine sound in the lounge and the equally fine fare on the new menu.

Noah Ophoven-Baldwin
Wednesday, November 18.Arne Fogel and the Wolverines, one of the longest-running partnerships in area jazz, take the stage at Crooners Lounge. In a far different vein, at Jazz Central, "Sisters" (aka the Baldwin Sisters) are actually musical brothers (unrelated)-- trumpeters Jake Baldwin and Noah Ophoven-Baldwin, offering up some free-wheeling improv duets on "New Music Night."

Thursday, November 19. At Vieux Carré, Jon Pemberton (on piano) opens the evening for a McNally Smith Night featuring the McNally X-Tet, led by Pete Whitman and modeled after his famed X-Tet.

Katia Cardenas
At Jazz Central, Vocal Jazz Night offers something a little different as singers Sheridan Zuther and Katia Cardenas try out solos and duets from Carole King's iconic Tapestry album. It's the first time these singers have presented King's music. More vocal jazz at Crooners tonight with the Ginger Commodore Quartet on stage.

Ron Miles
Jazz in the Target Atrium at Orchestra Hall, curated and led by Jeremy Walker, holds its second concert of the season, with special guest, trumpeter Ron Miles. "Looking East: New York Looms Large" considers the music of Ellington, Gershwin and others who celebrated their home town in their compositions. The Atrium Jazz Ensemble tonight features Chris Thomson, Jeremy Walker, Jeff Brueske and Tim Zhorne along with Denver-based trumpet star Miles, who was a celebrated guest last season as well.

Kevin Washington
A late night session at the Icehouse brings drummer Kevin Washington to the stage with his band, playing some music and hosting a jam session--and no cover!

Karrin Allyson, coming to the Dakota November 22-23

© Andrea Canter
Colder weather, darker days, holiday shopping--we are getting into Minnesota Winter mode. But we do not hibernate here-- we go out and enjoy live music! And we have plenty of options between now and Thanksgiving, with an ever-increasing number of "holiday" gigs appearing on the jazz calendar. This weekend, enjoy some favorite vocalists, local as well as internationally acclaimed honorary Minnesotan Karrin Allyson; some of our local legends take on the tunes and attitudes of Thelonious Monk; JazzMN Orchestra takes us on a tour of jazz from Jelly Roll to Snarky Puppy. Into the coming week, it's the Twin Cities debut of another international star, vocalist/composer/conceptualist Jen Shyu; energetic octogernarian Dave Karr takes the stage at Crooners; Jay Young leads with his piccolo bass at Jazz Central.....keep the jazz coming.

Big Gigs This Week

Sarah M. Greer
Friday, November 20. A vocalist known for her improvisation as well as teaching skills, Sarah M. Greer joins Peter Schimke, Anthony Cox, and Cory Healey for the "Masters" slot at Jazz Central Studios. On the other end of the experience spectrum, Friday Night Jazz at The Nicollet host the Minnesota Youth Jazz Bands I and II for a memorable evening of young talents, led by Phil Holm and David Mitchell.

McNasty Brass
More youthful energy is on stage at the Icehouse, as the McNasty Brass Band plays the first of the late night sets. Originating from a core of McNally Smith musicians, the band describes itself as  "a reckless, ten-piece megazord of horns and drums."

Jon Pemberton
At Vieux Carré, Jon Pemberton brings a quartet to the prime time slot, with Jon doubling on trumpet and piano, along with alto saxophonist Brad Holden, bassist Matt Peterson and drummer Mac Santiago. Brad is not heard as much as his talent deserves so this is a perfect opportunity to hear him along with his expert cohorts. Accordion star Dan Newton plays the early sets. Another accordion monster, Patrick Harison plays solo sets over the dinner hours at the Icehouse.

Andrew Walesch
Crooners Lounge hosts its first Founders Day event with a nonstop line-up from Happy Hour to closing, including sets from Andrew Walesch, Debbie Duncan, and the finale with Davina and the Vagabonds. That's a lot of music -- and as always, no cover at Crooners.

And it's a Washington family night at The Black Dog, with the monthly Donald Washingtonensemble, which tonight features the saxman's wife Faye on flute and cello, son Kevin on drums, and friend Dick Studer on bass.

If you are out in the New Ulm area, be sure to catch the Atlantis Quartet performing at the Grand Kabaret-- it's a free show!

JazzMN Orchestra
Saturday, November 21. The second JazzMN Orchestra concert of the season--at the Hopkins High School Auditorium-- will take the audience on a journey through the history of jazz, from the days of Jelly Roll Morton and Louis Armstrong, through the Swing Era and early days of bebop, into the world of John Coltrane and the cool jazz movement, up through modern legends like Herbie Hancock, and finally the 21st century's new voices, including Snarky Puppy. This show focuses on the talents of the band along with guest vocalist, Debbie Duncan.

Joyce Lyons
The Jazz @St. Barney's series continues at St. Barnabas Church in Plymouth with accomplished vocalist Joyce Lyons and her band--Phil Aaron, Graydon Peterson and Jay Epstein.

Kenny Horst, WWMD
Saturday Night Jazz at the Black Dog kicks off with up-and-coming sax star Evan Benidt and pals Ted Olsen and Lars-Erik Larson, followed by a veteran quartet exploring What Would Monk Do. WWMD launched at the Artists Quarter a few years ago, and now continues with a few gigs each year -- featuring Steve Kenny, Peter Schimke, Chris Bates and Kenny Horst. Their interpretations of Monk, as well as Monk-inspired originals, are as unique and entertaining as their namesake's compositions.

And if you prefer your Patty Peterson fix in the larger ensemble context, Patty and Friends take over the lounge at Crooners (with Sean Turner, Billy Franze and Bobby Vandell). And if you come early for Happy Hour, your treat will be a rare solo guitar performance from Reynold Philipsek.

James Buckley
Patrick Harison and James Buckley cover the dinner sets at the Icehouse; Maurice Jacox and trio performs at Normandy Kitchen; Robb Henry and Jim Plattes make guitar and violin duets at Merlin's Rest; Benny Weinbeck Trio at Parma 8200; the Talking Strings provide the sound track at the Loring Pasta Bar; and JoAnn Funk and Jeff Brueske hold their weekly sessions at the Lobby Bar of the Saint Paul Hotel. Note that JoAnn and Jeff also perform in the Lobby Bar on Fridays through the holidays.

Jerry O'Hagan
Sunday, November 22. Enjoy a jazz brunch with the usual suspects-- Patty and the Buttons at The Aster, Robert Everest at Maria's, the Andrew Walesch Trio at Crooners. Later, catch the Zacc Harris Trio at the Riverview Wine Bar or put on your dancing shoes and follow the Jerry O'Hagan Orchestra at Cinema Ballroom.

Karrin Allyson, new CD*
Sunday-Monday, November 22-23.Seems the holidays usually bring Karrin Allyson back to her adopted home in the Twin Cities and the Dakota. Last year she had a new holiday recording (Yuletide Hideaway), and now she has another new release, her first on Motema, celebrating Rodgers and Hammerstein on Many a New Day. The album features Kenny Barron and John Patitucci, but her touring trio includes stars in their own right--guitarist Ron Fleemans and bassist Larry Kohout; and as usual for her Dakota gigs, Karrin features local piano star Laura Caviani--when Karrin is not handling the keys herself. She'll be performing tunes from the new recording as well as some holiday fare and older favorites, and perhaps an original tune or two. It's always a celebration when Karrin is in town.

Jen Shyu*
Monday, November 23. Whether the talent is local or imported, JT's Jazz Implosion at the Icehouse is always worth the effort to find parking along Nicollet! Tonight JT has outdone himself, with three separate "solo" sets on the schedule. The first set marks the local debut of internationally acclaimed composer, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist Jen Shyu, performing her solo opera, Solo Rites: Seven Breaths. This work, composed and choreographed by Shyu, features her talents on vocals, dance, Taiwanese moon lute, piano, and the Korean gayageum. The New York Times described it as “songs that could remind you of ancient court music or Joni Mitchell,”  a musical pilgrimage through Taiwan, East Timor, Indonesia, Vietnam, and South Korea. Two additional solo acts follow, with New York-based Jonah Parzen-Johnson (Bari sax and synthesizer) and JT Bateshimself on solo percussion.
JT Bates

Joni Mitchell and Carole King are the subject matter for Lori Dokken and Friends at Crooners, while veteran sax titan Dave Brattain takes the "Spotlight" at Jazz Central.

Dave Karr
Tuesday, November 24. Tuesday Instrumental Jazz Night at Crooners features the one and only Dave Karr and his quartet, featuring Chris Lomheim on piano. Given his busy schedule (including JazzMN Orchestra) and energetic saxophoning, it's hard to remember that Dave is in his mid-80s.

Also high energy is the Twin Cities Latin Jazz Orchestra, performing on big band night at Jazz Central Studios. In St. Paul, Vieux Carré hosts "hot jazz" with vocalist Connie Evingson.

Charmin Michelle and Denny Malmberg
Wednesday, November 25. Start your holiday early at Crooners, where Happy Hour brings back Charmin Michelle and Denny Malmberg. If you're missing their long run at Fireside Pizza, consider this an upgrade-- a much bigger menu and more parking!

Jay Young
Take some time out from Thanksgiving preparations to stop at Jazz Central, where Jay Young pulls out his piccolo bass and heads an inventive ensemble with Pete Whitman, Gary Raynor and Jay Epstein. He dubs this band The Advisory Committee.

Debbie Duncan
Thursday, November 26. A lot of venues are closed for the holiday, but not Crooners. Debbie Duncan performs in the lounge from Noon - 3 pm, and you can enjoy the music with or without a holiday dinner! Or after your feast, come out to Parma 8200 for an evening with Benny Weinbeck.

Steve Kenny's Group 47 (at the Black Dog on November 28)
© Andrea Canter

We may be facing the darkest days of the year, but we are also facing one of the most jazz-packed weeks of the year. There's no intentional festival or organized music conspiracy, yet making choices, especially Saturday, will make your ears spin. But it's all good. Without the travel or expense, we can experience what might be normal for jazz fans in the Big Apple. So rest up on Thanksgiving and have an extra slice of pie--and let the jazz-a-thon begin!

Debbie Duncan
Friday, November 27. Kick-start your Black Friday shopping with brunch at Hell's Kitchen, music courtesy of smart and sassy vocalist Debbie Duncan. Come back early this evening (5-8 pm) after your shopping spree to hear East Side, with Reynold Philipsek, Matt Senjem and Jay Epstein, as they take you on a journey of 21st century swing.

Sorry if I confused anyone (other than myself) last week regarding Patty Peterson's gig at Parma 8200. In truth, it is tonight! Sit back and enjoy one of the area's most popular singers in the pared-down company of brother Paul (bass) and nephew Jason DeLaire (keys and perhaps sax?).

Paul Harper's new "Chordless Quartet" launches at The Nicollet, with Paul on saxes, Steve Kenny on FLUMPET™, Tom Lewis on bass and young Matthew Buckner on drums. They'll be reinterpreting works by Henderson and Monk, and playing new works from Paul and Steve.

Charmin & Shapira
Vieux Carré 's double header features pianist Jeremy Walker for the early show, then the classy pizazz of Charmin and Shapira and Friends. Both vocalist Charmin and guitarist Joel have recently returned from global adventures, and due to Paul Harper's new band at The Nicollet, there will be a couple guests among the "Friends"-- saxophonist Pete Whitman and bassist Pooch Heine.

Levi Schwartzberg
There's trouble at Jazz Central but it's "Good Trouble," a band of Appleton, WI musicians currently or formerly enrolled at the Lawrence Conservatory--Ben Phillips on trumpet, Will Fraser on alto sax, Carson Caldart on tenor sax, Sam Genualdi on guitar, Jonathan Fagan on piano, Jakob Heinemann on bass, and Jack Lussenden  on drums.  Plan to make it a late night as the student jam (10 pm) kicks off with the new Levi Schwartzberg Project. Led by U of M student vibes master Levi, the band includes similarly prodigious young lions--Thomas Strommen on tenor sax, Jackson Mullett on trumpet, Drew Stinson on bass, Ben Beyene on drums.

Dave King (Gang Font)
The Icehouse hosts a rare local appearance by The Gang Font, described as "math punk indie jazz noise prog post post modern contemporary instrumental pop rock," and featuring Dave King (drums), Erik Fratzke (guitar), Bryan Nichols (piano) and Greg Norton (bass).

Meanwhile, the usual suspects: Irv Williamscontinues to give old age the cold shoulder at happy hour at the Dakota; bassist James Buckley, this time with guitar wizard Tim Sparks, keeps dinner hour on edge at The Icehouse; JoAnn Funk and Jeff Brueske cover it all from Peggy Lee to Blossom Dearie in the Lobby Bar of the Saint Paul Hotel (now both Friday and Saturday through the holidays).

Saturday, November 28. The gigs tonight could be blocks apart in New York. As is, there's a lot just blocks apart in St. Paul alone

Adam Linz
You don't even have to wait til evening for some hot jazz in St Paul. Bassist Adam Linz is curating an afternoon of music at his part-time job at Barley Brothers Records, noon- 5 pm. Surrounded by shelves of vinyl, four bands keep live music in the air, starting with the Dominican Crisis Quintet at noon, followed by Ted King, the "Pony Show Edition" of Le Percheron (Adam, Noah Ophoven-Baldwin and Levi Schwartzberg), and winding up with the first public performance of the new edition of the Dakota Combo. No cover and lots of temptations among the record sales.

Steve Kenny
Saturday Night Jazz at the Black Dog bills the two gigs as "opening" and "headliner" but that's not an accurate distinction tonight, although median age does distinguish Group 47 and Vector Families. Steve Kenny's Group 47opens at 7 pm, a welcome return of the band that played weekly during the final six months of the Artists Quarter and then found new hosts at Jazz Central, the Black Dog, The Nicollet, Icehouse, Vieux Carré and the Twin Cities Jazz Festival. It's a band that veteran trumpeter Kenny pulled together after his long-running Bastids ensemble completed its five-year tenure at the AQ, holding over bassist Adam Tucker and pulling in then very-young pianist Will Kjeer and nearly as young tenor saxophonist Thomas Strommen, along with UW-River Falls drummer Alex Burgess. Two years later, the band has a vinyl recording (Straight to Vinyl); Strommen has transferred from River Falls to the U of M, and Kjeer graduated from high school and is now studying at Cal Arts. Which means Group 47 gigs are limited to holidays and college breaks.

Anthony Cox
The "headline" band at the Black Dog is indeed a band of headliners. Formerly known as the PBR Street Gang, Vector Families features internationally renowned artists who happen to live in the Twin Cities--drummer Dave King and bassist Anthony Cox, along with local guitar legend Dean Granros and future legend, saxophonist Brandon Wozniak.

Peg Carrothers
The stars above St Paul are certainly casting a wide beam tonight. Two short blocks from the Black Dog, vocalist Peg Carrothers and her better-known spouse, pianist Bill Carrothers, celebrate Peg's new recording, Edges of My Mind, as well as the opening of a new Jazz at Studio Z concert season. Starting at 6 pm with a "master class" on jazz singing, Peg and Bill then join forces with the artists on the recording-- Dean Magraw on guitar and mandolin and Billy Peterson on bass--for a concert that takes us through the ethereal music of the CD, songs that stretch in time from Stephen Foster to the Rolling Stones and Aerosmith.

Pat Mallinger
And less than a mile away, Vieux Carré hosts an unusual "homecoming" for saxophonist and St Paul native Pat Mallinger, a long-time cohort of Bill Carrothers. For years since he relocated to Chicago, Pat returned for holiday gigs at the Artists Quarter, playing his last with Carrothers on Thanksgiving weekend 2013. Now he's back to the same space, new club, and he even has drummer and AQ owner Kenny Horst in tow to handle the drum duties. With his usual bandmates Bill Carrothers and Billy Peterson otherwise occupied at Studio Z, he'll be joined by Chris Lomheim on piano and Andrew Foreman on bass.

Charmin Michelle and Sam Miltich
In South St. Paul, there's a very special evening planned at the Croation Hall, where vocalist Charmin Michelle teams up with guitarist Sam Miltich for a dinner and music night. Augmenting the buttery voice of Charmin and the hot club swinging swagger of Sam's guitar will be sax giant Dave Karr, Sam's dad Matthew Miltich on bass and Nathan Norman on drums. There's an optional dinner buffet to complete the evening.

Jazz in the Lobby Bar with JoAnn Funk and Jeff Brueske, Benny Weinbeck Trio at Parma 8200, Sophia Shorai at Hell's Kitchen, Talking Strings at Loring Pasta Bar, and Tim Sparks (dinner sets) at the Icehouse offer more choices for Saturday night jazz fever.

Andrew Walesch
Sunday, November 29.  In case you are tired of leftover turkey or managed to wipe it out, you might be up for jazz brunch -- the Andrew Walesch Trioat Crooners, Patty and the Buttons at the Aster Cafe, Robert Everest at Maria's. Or plan an evening away from leftovers at the Riverview Wine Bar with the Zacc Harris Trio.

Pat Martino
Monday, November 30. It's been a long time since guitar master Pat Martino was in town, but the durable virtuoso finally returns for one night at the Dakota, bringing in his smoldering organ trio with B-3 hot-handed Pat Bianchi and sleight-of-hand drummer Carmen Intorre. Already a star when a brain aneurysm left him unable to play, Martino famously relearned every lick and returned to star-level performing in one of the greatest comeback stories in music.

Vocalist Charmin Michelle is back at Crooners Lounge, this time in prime time with a quartet of feisty swingers-- Denny Malmberg on accordion, Steve Pikal on bass, and Jay Epstein on drums.

Jazz Central Studios welcomes Winston-Salem, NC-based keyboard monster Abebi Stafford to the Spotlight series. A Minnesota native, Stafford headlined the Twin Cities "Hot Sumer Jazz Festival" back in 2002, and in 2004 won the Future of Jazz Competition with his band Bayorhythm. He's toured internationally and is working on his fourth album.

Happy Hour at Crooners will feature vocalist/pianist Andrew Walesch all week, starting tonight. That's a cool way to start your evening, whether you plan to stay on for dinner and more music or just chill out before heading home.

JT Bates
JT's Jazz Implosion at the Icehouse will feature the Bates Brothers (JT on drums, Chris on bass) "plus guests."Turns out those guests include Mike Lewis (sax) and Cory Wong (guitar). An enviable guest list.

Tuesday, December 1. Vieux Carré hosts two of our finest jazz women tonight, starting off with Mary Louise Knutson on solo piano, followed by Maryann Sullivan's Corner Jazz-- Maryann on vocals with Javi Santiago on piano, Steve Pikal on bass, and Trevor Haining on drums.

It's the First Tuesday, meaning Dean Magraw and Davu Seru create guitar/percussion mayhem at The Black Dog, while the Bill Simenson Orchestra holds its monthly bash at Jazz Central.

Steven Hobert
And it's instrumental jazz night at Crooners, with the Steven Hobert Quartet on stage. Inventive and eclectic, Hobert appears with strong support from saxophonist Brian Gallagher, bassist Yohannes Tona and drummer Pete Hennig.

Diane Schuur
Wednesday, December 2. It's a long-awaited return of Grammy-winning vocalist Diane Schuur, back at the Dakota tonight for two engaging sets. Her voice has covered nearly every corner of American music, and her sets are as entertaining as they are musical. And her band will be filled with first-call musicians.

A local songbird with an equally distinguished career, Connie Evingson hosts her monthly Jazz in the Lounge at the Minneapolis Woman's Club, tonight with Mary Louise Knutson, Dave Karr and Chris Bates.

At Hell's Kitchen, the Wolverines Trio (Rick Carlson, Steve Pikal, Jendeen Forberg) return with some devilish sets. Meanwhile at Jazz Central, the "new music" series presents a new quartet from Davu Seru, Destruct/Reconstruction, with Anthony Cox, Steve Kenny and Levi Schwartzberg.

Lila Ammons
And Lila's Jazz Triangle returns to the Tangiers for Jazz After Work, now at a new time to attract the after-work crowd (6-9 pm). Lila Ammons heads this trio, bringing her natural talents and experience touring in Europe, to say nothing of her legacy --granddaughter of boogie-woogie master Albert Ammons and niece of hard bop saxophonist Gene Ammons. Adding pianist Peter Schimke and bassist Jim Chenoweth only up the ante.

Thursday, December 3. Crooners is starting a special duo series on the First Thursday of the month, dubbed "In the Crook"-- singers and pianists. Tonight enjoy two of the hardest swinging musicians in town, vocalist Charmin Michelle with pianist (and every singer's best friend) Rick Carlson.

Atlantis Quartet -- at The Nicollet and Black Dog!
© Andrea Canter

Interesting dialogue on Facebook regarding the nature of "music" venues (crowd, volume, expectations) and the potential to attract new audiences to jazz. As you venture out this week-- and there's plenty to hear--consider your surroundings and how they do or do not contribute to your enjoyment of the music and its survival.... as well as the survival of the venue. And check out back-to-back gigs from the Atlantis Quartet; Charles Lazarus with a new "Merry and Bright" at Orchestra Hall; new talents (Jamison Ross) and living legends (Ramsey Lewis) at the Dakota; local legends Butch Thompson and Dean Magraw at Crooners,  the return of the Adam Meckler Orchestra at Vieux Carré... and the beat goes on!

Big Gigs This Week
The Girls*
Friday, December 4. A six-part reunion at the Dakota ushers in the holidays as The Girls reunite--all six of the vocalists who at one time or another performed with the beloved quartet over the past decade-plus. The original core--Lori Dokken, Judi Donaghy Vinar, Erin Schwab and Debbie Duncan were augmented over the years by Patty Peterson and Rachel Holder-Hennig, and now the full sextet brings us "Harmony and Humor" -- and you can count on plenty of both.

The very successful Eight O'Clock Jump concert series at Walker West Music Academy finishes the 2015 season with St Paul native pianist and producer Anthony Walker taking a break from duties as Music Director for Ledisi. He'll be joined by a local ensemble headed by drum titan Kevin Washington. Stay tuned for the announcement of the 2016 season!

Jordan Anderson
Pianists takes the spotlight at Jazz Central, where Ted Godboutleads a trio with bassist Matt Peterson and drummer Peter James Johnson, followed by an all-star youth quartet headed by pianist Jordan Anderson; and in St. Paul, Jeremy Walker starts off the evening at Vieux Carré.

Charles Lazarus
Trumpeter Charles Lazarus brings his "Merry and Bright" to Orchestra Hall, featuring vocalists Tonia Hughes and Bruce Henry. From Latin to lounge, groove to gospel, the set list moves from "Christmas Time Is Here" to "Frosty the Snowman," NOLA style. The Lazarus Brass (Minnesota Orchestra brass experts) and his jazz rhythm team of Tommy Barbarella, Jeff Bailey and Dave Schmalenberger will be on hand to add to the holiday cheer.

At The Bedlam, percussion ensemble Matra plays their last gig til spring, featuring Andres Crovetti on vibes, Matthew Solace on drumset, Krissy Bergmark on tablas and Jenny Klukken on marimba.

Steven Hobert and Dean Magraw
A relatively new pairing, guitarist Dean Magraw and pianist Steven Hobert are in perfect alignment, tonight performing at the Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church off Loring Park.

Chris Bates
Friday-Saturday, December 4-5. On annual local "Jazz Artists of the Year" lists and ready to head to New York for a studio recording session, the Atlantis Quartet took a short vacation this fall, and are now back and blowing up stages all over town. This weekend, they go back-to-back, from Minneapolis to St Paul, appearing on Steve Kenny's series at both the Nicollet (Friday Night Jazz) and Black Dog (Saturday Night Jazz). Zacc Harris, Brandon Wozniak, Chris Bates and Pete Hennig are each a force of nature on the Twin Cities jazz scene, and together they can seem like a force of the supernatural! At the Black Dog Saturday, they will be preceded by an opening set from saxophonist Tommy Bentzand his quartet with Steve Kenny, Jason McLean and Alex Burgess.

JoAnn Funk
Jazz in the Lobby Bar of the Saint Paul Hotel continues the weekend holiday tradition with JoAnn Funk and Jeff Brueske covering both Friday and Saturday.

Saturday, December 5. Jazz at St Barneys holds two concerts this month, the first tonight with perennial favorite Connie Evingson, singing with great support from Mary Louise Knutson and Dave Karr.

Pippi Ardennia
In Lowertown, the Bedlam hosts the season-closing PipJazz show, with Pippi Ardennia leading a band of young upstarts, from McNally Smith, the U of M and beyond, with special guest, guitarist John Penny. Proceeds support the PipJazz Foundation (which promotes opportunities for young musicians) and the Bedlam.

Patty Peterson
At Crooners, Patty Peterson and Friends return, with Phil Aaron, Mark Weisburg and Bobby Vandell joining Patty for a night of song and fun. And speaking of crooners, Arne Fogel joins a satanic trio (Steven Hobert, Matt Peterson and Dick Bortolussi) for "December in Hell" -- that's at Hell's Kitchen.

Joan Griffith
The Minnesota Guitar Society's annual Acoustic Jazz Guitar-a-Thon takes place at Sundin Hall at Hamline University, featuring the best of Twin Cities' jazz guitarists--Robert Bell and Gary Schulte Duo, Dean Granros, Joan Griffith, Chris Olson, Liz DeYoe, Tomas Simpson and Soren Schendeman.

At the Icehouse, young lion pianist Javi Santiago joins bassist James Buckley for dinner hour sets.

Zacc Harris
Sunday, December 6. Jazz Brunch is always a fun addition to the weekend-- check out the Aster for Patty and the Buttons and Maria's for Robert Everest. This afternoon, the Century Jazz Ensemble holds its holiday concert at Century College; and the Capri Big Band performs at the Capri Theater. In the evening, hear the MacJazzband under the direction of Joan Griffith at Mairs Concert Hall in the Janet Wallace Fine Arts complex at Macalester. The Zacc Harris Trio holds its weekly seance at the Riverview Wine Bar.

Laura Caviani
Monday, December 7. A special evening at the Dakota is sponsored by Lawrence University, home to one of the top music conservatories in the Midwest. The LU Jazz Faculty Quartet perform with special guests, Lawrence alums Adam Meckler, Laura Caviani and Mary Louise Knutson. Note tickets are sold by Lawrence and not the Dakota.

As so often the case, Monday night at Jazz Central introduces a new band of area veterans, tonight led by guitarist Park Evans. His cohorts are each well accomplished in his own right--saxophonist Brandon Wozniak, trumpeter Zack Lozier, bassist Cody McKinney and drummer Greg Schutte.

Bryan Nichols
At the Icehouse, JT's Jazz implosion will play home to the first annual Rhodes Summit. Bryan Nichols, John C. S. Keston, DeVon Russel Gray and Martin Dosh will play two sets of music on four Rhodes pianos. "Hopefully the stage won't collapse. Some songs, some improv. Mucho Rhodes."

The Acme Jazz Company takes the stage at Crooners, filling the lounge and bar with a raft of original charts.

Butch Thompson
Tuesday, December 8. Tuesday Instrumental Music night at Crooners features a pair of crowd favorites, pianist Butch Thompson and guitarist Dean Magraw, mixing it up with trademark skill and humor.

The inventive Nova Jazz Orchestra is back at the Minnesota Music Cafe for their monthly gig, with special guest, vocalist Tony Demarco. And every Tuesday is Big Band night at Jazz Central, tonight featuring the Cedar Avenue Big Band.

Chris Olson
At the Black Dog, second Tuesdays mean the Chris Olson Project, and the project expands greatly tonight to a septet with Zoe Berman (vocals), Andrew Godell (vocals, violin), Jemma Heigis (keyboard), Kristoph Krabbenhoft (drums), Megan Mahoney (bass), Julian Manzara (guitar), and of course Olson on guitar as well as some dance moves.

There's more guitar at Vieux Carré where Joel Shapira and Dave Martin match wits with drummer Pete Hennig in a trio dubbed The Growlers. Chris Lomheim's sublime solo piano kicks off the evening.

At the Dakota, 2012 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Drum Competition winner Jamison Ross makes his club debut, not only showcasing his drumming and composing, but also his skills as a vocalist, as featured on his new album, Jamison.

Framework
Wednesday, December 9. At Jazz Central, new music night presents Framework, one of the most creatively ambitious string trios around, with Chris Olson on guitar, Chris Bates on bass and Jay Epstein on drums.

At Crooners, the Debbie Duncan Quartet will make you forget the cold and damp.

Ramsey Lewis
Wednesday-Thursday, December 9-10. Keyboard icon Ramsey Lewis has appeared at the Dakota several times over the past few years, and now returns with his special holiday dazzle and his acoustic band-- featuring Henry Johnson on guitar, Joshua Ramos on bass, and Charles Heath on drums. Two nights, four sets. Hang on, Santa!

Vicky Mountain
Thursday, December 10. Vocalist and vocal instructor Vicky Mountain gets out of class early enough for a gig at Jazz Central tonight with trio-mates Chris Lomheim and Jim Chenoweth, while at The Nicollet, it's vocalist Karen Quiroz and Samba Meu, exploring acoustic Brazilian roots and pop with noted jazz artists Dave Martin (guitar), Tim O'Keefe (percussion) and special guest, Pat O'Keefe, on clarinet.

Adam Meckler
Vieux Carré welcomes back the Adam Meckler Orchestra, 18 of the finest young jazz artists in the region playing original charts from bandleader and trumpeter Adam. Come early for a duo of similarly fine young jazzers, pianist Joe Strachan and bassist Ted Olsen.

In St. Paul, The Yeggs take the floor at Khyber Pass, with Adam Linz and Paul Metzger weaving their respective strings, followed by a solo set from young trumpeter Noah Ophoven-Baldwin.

Listen Up! New Room at Crooners to Feature Bösendorfer, Top Jazz and More

"Our aim is to inspire pianists, music educational institutions, concert halls and music lovers the world over with our legendary sound." -- Bösendorfer

Suppose you owned a supper club, bar and lounge in Fridley, MN that already featured music seven days per week... and had an opportunity to "borrow" a 9 1/2-foot Bösendorfer grand piano? For Mary Tjosvold, owner of Crooners Lounge, there was little hesitation. The piano needed a space and musicians to play it. The metro area had a serious audience in search of more opportunities to relax and listento the high caliber musicians in our midst. And musicians needed another venue where music would be regarded as art deserving that attentive audience.

Bill Carrothers

On December 22, the Dunsmore Room at Crooners will officially open with music provided by the Dave King Trio, with native son Bill Carrothers caressing the Bösendorfer. Laura Caviani's Holiday Show, originally slated for the Lounge, instead will provide a preview of the Dunsmore Room on December 17. And curator Andrew Walesch already has the room booked through January, as well as a special evening with Geoffrey Keezer in late March.

The Dunsmore Room

Larry and Mary*
The Dunsmore Room is named for the late co-owner of Crooners Lounge, vocalist/pianist Larry Dunsmore, who took lessons with Thelonious Monk, accompanied Ella Fitzgerald and Barry Manilow, and spent his life singing and playing for the royalty of the world, including even the Queen of England. This intimate listening space will be devoted to jazz and other great music two-three nights per week in what is otherwise the Lakeside Room.

With a seating capacity of 85-90, one of the top pianos in the Midwest, a new stage and acoustics, the Dunsmore Room will boast a schedule featuring the best from the local and national scene, reserved tables, and "never a cover." Instead, reasonable drink and food minimums will be set for each show, generally $15 for most local artists, with chef-planned specials to help keep those minimums realistic. (In the bar and lounge, which will continue to host music 7 days per week, the no-cover, no-minimum policy will continue.)

The opportunity to have available the 9 1/2-foot Bösendorfer grand -- considered by many to be the best piano line in the world--provides a rare opportunity for metro area audiences, as well as for pianists from the metro and beyond. Much of the music to be scheduled in the Dunsmore Room will take full advantage of this amazing instrument.

The Music

At this time, the Dunsmore Room will host live music two to three nights per week, including two of the series initiated recently in the Lounge:

Three Sundays each month, singer, pianist and host Dan Chouinard brings his newest creation, The Birthday Club, to the Dunsmore Room, celebrating the music birthdays and anniversaries of the month, featuring a stellar guest singer each week.

Tuesday Jazz Night will move into the Dunsmore Room, presenting the finest instrumental artists and small ensembles (and usually taking advantage of the piano!).

On the first Thursday of the month, "In the Crook" will feature a star vocalist "in the crook" of the Bösendorfer, accompanied by one of the area's top pianists. The January honors go to Rachel Holder-Hennig with Rick Carlson (January 7).

On Mondays or Wednesdays a few times per month, the Dunsmore Room will host an impressive roster of artists presenting themed events in this intimate setting.

Reservations and Minimums
As with all music at Crooners Lounge, there is no cover or ticket for music in the Dunsmore Room. However, there will be minimum drink and food charges for these shows, generally ranging from $15 -$40. New Chef Ben McCallum will prepare some specials that take the minimums into account. This means that for the minimum charge (similar to covers and ticket prices at other venues), you will be charged for food and beverage at that amount, with additional purchases added to your final bill. Order with the minimum in mind. Of course patrons can order less-- but note you will nevertheless be charged the minimum.
Reservations for The Dunsmore Room are encouraged as seating is limited, and can be made in advance at  (763) 571-9020. Be sure to specify that you want reservations for the Dunsmore Room.

Maria Schneider Orchestra -- Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album (Thompson Fields)

© Andrea Canter

Although Jazz has been rarely high profile among Grammy nominations, awards or the televised awards program (save Esperanza Spalding's surprise win as Best New Artist), there are a number of jazz and jazz-related categories, and again, the 2016 nominations reflect a broad cross-section of jazz artists appearing in both jazz and not-really-jazz categories. And sometimes the definitions of categories seem a bit blurry, which perhaps works to the advantage of artists like Tonny Bennett and Bill Charlap, nominated for "Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album."

New York Voices, at the Dakota December 14-15
© Andrea Canter

Holiday themes prevail over much of the Twin Cities music scene as we count down to the end of the year, and jazz is no exception. Concerts and gigs featuring instrumental trios, vocal ensembles and more make the season bright, but so do CD release celebrations, new bands, old favorites and.. everything jazz.

Big Gigs This Week
Rio Nido (in the day)*
Friday, December 11.A long overdue reunion, the beloved classical jazz trio of the 70s and 80s, Rio Nido is back for two sets at the Dakota. From 1972-1986, Tim Sparks, Prudence Johnson and Tom Lieberman kept the music of the 30s and 40s alive and well before moving on to launch their own stellar solo careers.

Eric Gravatt
Eric Gravatt returns to Jazz Central with Source Code, tonight featuring saxophonist Chris Thomson in the front line with trumpeter Solomon Parham, veteran Source Code bassist Ron Evaniuk, and of course Weather Report alum Gravatt on drums. They're followed by the student set and jam, this time featuring the Jax Blake Tricetet.

At The Nicollet, prime time bandleader and trumpeter Bill Simenson breaks away from the big band format to assemble a star-bright quintet with saxophonist Nathan Hanson, guitarist Dave Martin, bassist Chris Bates and brother, drummer JT Bates. The monthly JazzINK Youth Showcase kicks off the evening with teen talents, the Mac Wilms Quartet.

Laura Caviani
Laura Caviani and her trio offer the first of two holiday shows this week, starting at Vieux Carré in St Paul with Gordy Johnson on bass and Joe Pulice on drums-- the same cast as her holiday release, Holly, Jolly and Jazzy. Laura brings at least one holiday show to the metro every winter, filled with originals and reinterpretations of seasonal standards. Andrew Foreman and Ben Abrahamson open the night with a string duo.

Arne Fogel
At Parma 8200, Arne Fogel celebrates the eve of Frank Sinatra's centennial birthday with Steve Pikal and Rick Carlson, including their renditions of "Fly Me To The Moon", "I've Got The World On A String", "The Tender Trap", "Our Love Is Here To Stay", "Wee Small Hours", and more. JoAnn Funk and Jeff Brueskehave some holiday fun in the Lobby Bar at the Saint Paul Hotel (and again on Saturday).

Saturday, December 12. Need a midday break from shopping? At Midtown Global Market, Charmin Michelle and Joel Shapira make voice/guitar duo magic.
At Crooners Lounge, Andrew Walesch and his 9-piece orchestra reprise his recent centennial salutes to Frank Sinatra on Frank's actual birthday.
Jeff King
Saturday Night Jazz at the Black Dog hosts what unofficially is a Cadenza Music night, starting off with the Cadenza All-Stars (guitarists Eugene Monnig and Wayne Fisher, bassist Erik Fratzke, drummer Andres Crovetti and vocalist Paula Lammers)-- all current or former instructors at Cadenza Music. The "headline" sets celebrate the release of Jokers, the first recording of King Fletcher Woods-- Jeff King on sax, Charles Fletcher on bass and Eron Woods on drums. All but Fletcher teach at Cadenza.

JT Bates
And it's the second concert of the Jazz at Studio Z season, tonight featuring drummer JT Bates and his organ trio, Grain -- Kevin Gastonguay on B-3 and Zacc Harris on guitar. As with all JASZ evenings, things start off with a master class at 6 pm, tonight with JT and company addressing how they find the groove before taking the stage and proving they teach what they do.

Peter Kogan
Minnesota Orchestra timpanist Peter Kogan has been spreading his wings in jazz lately, now bringing his quartet to Vieux Carré (with Brian Grivna, Phil Aaron, and Anthony Cox), while Maurice Jacox brings cheer to the Normandy Kitchen and the Benny Weinbeck Trio holds their weekly summit at Parma 8200.

Charanga Tropical
Sunday, December 13. The first American band to play the International Danzon Festival in Havana (last summer), Doug Little's Charanga Tropical performs its monthly afternoon gig at the Icehouse. Also midafternoon, enjoy some big band holiday sounds with the Capri Big Band at Edinborough Park.

Another CD release, this time Fuzzy Math celebrates their second album, Pass the Guacamole, at the Icehouse. Referred to as the jazz band for people who don't like jazz, Mark Vandermyde, keys; Eric Graham, bass; Andrew Schwandt, sax; and Haralds Bondaris, drums should also appeal to those who do like jazz!

Monday, December 14. You can have lunch in Hell today-- Hell's Kitchen offers a lunch-time holiday show with the Jaztronauts, headed by saxophonist/vocalist Jason Weisman.

U of M Jazz Ensembles I and II present their winter concert at Ted Mann with guest artist, trombonist David Springfield.

Steven Hobert
What should be an enjoyable pairing, pianist Steven Hobert and trumpeter Adam Meckler take the spotlight at Jazz Central, while inventive saxophonist George Cartwright is on stage at the Icehouse for JT's Jazz Implosion. JT's electronic experiments add to the fun, along with bassist Josh Granowski and guitarist Andrew Broder.

New York Voices
Monday-Tuesday, December 14-15. Nothing says "holiday music" like multi-part vocal harmonies, and the New York Voices are arguably the best. Most recently in the Twin Cities with the JazzMN Orchestra (2014), the quartet of Peter Eldridge, Darmon Meador, Kim Nazarian and Laura Kinhan continue the artistry that has worked magic for the past 27 years, performing their holiday show over two nights at the Dakota.

And it's two consecutive nights in Hell with Charmin Michelle and Vic Volare!

Phil Aaron
Tuesday, December 15. Pianist Phil Aaron gets his due, performing with his trio on the Tuesday Instrumental Jazz Night at Crooners Lounge--before the series moves into the new Dunsmore Room next week.

KBEM holds its annual holiday party at Vieux Carré, but anyone can come in for the music which features the McNally Smith -affiliated Gerard Ahlgren Group followed by vocalist Katia Cardenas.

And it's Big Band Night at Jazz Central, with Doug Haining and Scott Agster's Explosion Big Band hitting the rafters tonight.

Charmin and Shapira
Wednesday, December 16. A fine night for song: Charmin and Shapira bring holiday cheer to "Holli-Jazzle" at Andrew Riverside Church in Minneapolis.   At Crooners, Denny Malmberg and Paula Lammers make it an accordion-vocal duo during Happy Hour, while Debbie Duncan brings her wit and song to the Dakota in prime time.

Laura Caviani
Thursday, December 17. Their second holiday gig of the week, the Laura Caviani Trio has the special honor of providing a preview of the new Dunsmore Room at Crooners, which officially opens on December 22. Formerly the Lakeside dining room, on two or three nights each week, the Dunsmore Room will feature instrumental or vocal music in an intimate space (seating for 80-90) intended for serious listening, with one of the world's most serious pianos on stage-- a 9-foot Bosendorfer. Join Laura, Gordy Johnson and Dave Schmalenberger for holiday music, dining specials, and a glorious new sound.

Larry McDonough
Another always-anticipated holiday show, Larry McDonough brings his quartet and guests to the Dakota, including daughter Rosie on African percussion. Count on Larry to not only make your season bright, but to put your ears on full alert with his odd meters.

A new venue in downtown Delano --the Bonde Bistro-- welcomes the Pete Snell Trio with Pete on sax, Lee Blaske on piano, and Jim Chenoweth on bass.  And if your tastes run smooth, you can't do better than an evening with pianist George Winston at Orchestra Hall.

The Dunsmore Room opens officially with the Dave King Trio on December 22

The weather of the moment seems much like the Twin Cities jazz scene-- a mix of everything! From big band and trad to swinging vocals, "chamber jazz" to avant garde, and from holiday magic to CD release, there's no shortage of jazzy entertainment this week. Actually the scene is much better than the weather!

Big Gigs This Week

Dave Brattain
Friday, December 18. About a year ago, saxophone giant Dave Brattain and fleet-fingered guitarist Kevin Daley started a quartet dubbed the Daley Brattain Report, but soon rebranded with the impossible-to-spell da-ke-brōō-da, taking a couple letters--or sounds--from each musician's first name (Dave Brattain, Kevin Daley, Bruce Heine and Dave Stanoch). While I can't guarantee the spelling here, there is no doubt regarding the effectiveness of this collaboration, coming together again at Jazz Central.

Peter Vircks
In 2014, the Peter Vircks Quartet released a well-received album, What You Believe Is True, a favorite at MPR and elsewhere. The band returns to The Nicollet tonight (Friday Night Jazz at The Nicollet series), featuring leader Vircks on sax, Brian Ziemniak on keys, Ron Evaniuk on bass and Kevin Washington on drums.

Doc Severinsen & Vanessa Thomas
It's an almost annual holiday celebration at Orchestra Hall, as Doc Severinsen returns as "Jingle Bell Doc," conducting the Minnesota Orchestra along with our own Mary Louise Knutson on piano, Vanessa Thomas on vocals, the Minnesota Chorale and Twin Cities Bronze (handbell ensemble). It might be predictable, but it's always fun and Doc can still blow a great horn. The concert repeats on Sunday afternoon.

Irv Williams
Happy Hour just seems happier during the holidays. At 96, Irv Williams is still at it, with pal Steve Blons for Friday Happy Hour at the Dakota. At Crooners' Lounge, vocalist/pianist Andrew Walesch raps up his week-long Happy Hour run, while songbird Maud Hixson (with Rick Carlson and Gordy Johnson) returns to the lounge at Parma 8200 for a "happy evening," still flying high after her gig at the famed St. Peter's Church in Manhattan last month.

Pianist Todd Harper and his quartet open the evening at the Black Dog, followed by the inventive Donald Washington Group, with Washington on saxes, wife Faye on cello and flute, son Kevin on drums, and Dick Studer on bass.

Bryan Nichols
Want a little piano with your dinner? Bryan Nichols teams with bassist Jeremy Boettcher at the Icehouse, while Jeremy Walker starts the evening at Vieux Carré.  And JoAnn Funk and Jeff Brueske calm holiday nerves in the Lobby Bar at the Saint Paul Hotel, back again tomorrow (see below) as their two-night weekend gig continues through the holidays.

Ginger Commodore
Saturday, December 19. Another favorite songbird, Ginger Commodore brings her holiday show with her GCQ Quartet to Vieux Carré Saturday night-- with her core band of Lee Blaske, Mark Weisberg and Bobby Commodore, with Rich Manik on sax and some extra percussion from Daryl Boudreaux. Ginger's gospel-tinged, bluesy vocals are particularly well suited to holiday fare. (Catch her in the act again at Crooners on Wednesday!)

Dean Granros, Chris Bates (Tall Tales)
Saturday Night Jazz at the Black Dog brings back two crowd favorites: Long-time Monday night band at the Artists Quarter, Headspace opens the evening (Rob Dewy, Matt Senjem, Adam Ropar) with curator Steve Kenny adding some brass; the headline band will be Dean Granros' Tall Tales -- a double guitar quartet with Zacc Harris, Chris Bates and Jay Epstein spinning "tall tales," of course, and nearly spinning out of orbit.

JoAnn Funk
JoAnn Funk'sLobby Bar gig at the Saint Paul Hotel transforms into her annual "Deck the Halls" night, adding the baritone voice of Steve Marking and violinist Gary Schulte to Jeff Brueske's basslines and of course JoAnn's piano and vocals.  And at the Normandy Kitchen, keyboard mayhem prevails with the Travis Anderson Trio (with Steve Pikal and Nathan Norman).

Sunday, December 20. Singer, pianist and bandleader Andrew Walesch does double duty at Crooners today, leading his trio (Gordy Johnson, Jay Epstein) during the weekly jazz brunch, then coming back with the trio at 5 pm in the new (not officially opened!) Dunsmore Room for a couple hours of his favorite holiday tunes, played on the Bösendorfer.

The Nova Jazz Orchestra makes it their fourth annual holiday concert lat afternoon at St James Lutheran Church in St Paul.

Patty Peterson and Jason DeLaire
And another very long-running tradition, the Peterson Family Holiday Show will be presented twice at the Dakota. Now headed by the five siblings--Linda, Patty, Ricky, Billy and Paul Peterson with Linda's son Jason Peterson DeLaire, the show has been a seasonal favorite for more than 25 years. Seating is very limited... if any seat remains!

Mike Lewis
Monday, December 21. Young guitar sensation Jon Wood takes the spotlight and heads the following jam session at Jazz Central, while the avant garde holds a meltdown at the Icehouse tonight -- guitarist Phil Wood tangles with saxman Mike Lewis and Implosion series host JT Bates.

Maryann Sullivan and Doug Haining
Taking a more traditional view, the popular Twin Cities Sevenled by Doug Haining returns to its regular rotation at Crooners, with vocalist Maryann Sullivan guaranteeing the music will swing all night.

Monday-Tuesday, December 21-22. It's not unusual for Cuban pianist Nachito Herrera to play at the Dakota, as he is on stage there nearly monthly. But this two-night stand is different-- Nachito Herrera and the Universals features a collaboration of cultures and musics. In addition to the volcanic technique and firestorm energy of Nachito, the band features violinist Karen Briggs (Yanni, Stanley Clarke, David Grusin), saxophonist Mike Phillips (Stevie Wonder, Prince), Senagalese bassist Cheikh Ndoye (Eric Marienthal, Russell Ferante), and drummer Raul Pineda (Chucho Valdes).

Pat O'Keefe, Cherry Spoon
At the Black Dog, it's another installment of the Cherry Spoon Collective, surely one of the most intriguing ensembles of new music devotees. Performing new commissions and improvisational new music, the leaders include Michelle Kinney (cello), Nick Guadette (bass) and Patrick O’Keefe (sax), with a cast of the area's top experimenters. Funding comes from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the American Composers Forum.

Dave King
Tuesday, December 22. Tonight marks the official opening of the Dunsmore Room at Crooners, the converted Lakeside Dining Room now a full service jazz club two-three nights per week, with the centerpiece a 9-foot Bösendorfer on a newly built stage, with new sound system. And what better way to celebrate than with the Dave King Trio? King launched this trio a few years ago with the acclaimed recording, I've Been Ringing You (Sunnyside, 2012),featuring piano wizard Bill Carrothers and eclectic bass genius Billy Peterson. Consistent with all music at Crooners, there's no cover, but shows in the Dunsmore Room will have a set minimum food and drink purchase. And they will make that easy with some special items. But most important, the quiet setting and policies of the Dunsmore Room should ensure a perfect listening environment for one of the most inventive jazz trios on the scene, anywhere.
The Dunsmore Room piano

The master of odd time signatures, pianist Larry McDonoughbrings his quartet and holiday show to Lowertown at The Bedlam. Larry's vocals and piano will warm the most surly Scrooge, and his band-- Richard Terrill on sax, Greg Stinson on bass, Dean White on drums, and daughter Rosie McDonough on African percussion--will add modern twists to some familiar holiday carols.

Chris Lomheim
At Vieux Carré, two sure things: Solo piano from Chris Lomheimto start the evening, followed by vocalist Connie Evingson. They're just so predictable-- predictably at the top of the game. And on Big Band Night at Jazz Central, the music moves south for the Twin Cities Latin Jazz Orchestra, led by Geoff Senn and Mac Santiago.

Retro Swing Sister
Wednesday, December 23. The Ginger Commodore Quartet reprises their holiday show, now moving north to Crooners Lounge. And if your feet want more exercise than tapping, try a swing dance at the Eagles Club with music from Retro Swing Sister--Maryann Sullivan and Rhonda Laurie.

Yet another annual holiday show is back-- the George Maurer Groupreturns to the Dakota with rearrangements of seasonal favorites from his ensemble of the area's top instrumentalists and smoldering vocals.

Thursday, December 24. T'is the night before Christmas and some venues are closed, but you can enjoy Joel Shapiraat Hell's Kitchen or Benny Weinbeckat Parma 8200.

The Bad Plus at the Dakota December 25-28

© Andrea Canter
This must be the super-holiday edition of the Lead Sheet, with the "week" extending from Christmas Day to New Year's Eve. And as such, some venues will be closed or have atypical hours, so jazz fans are urged to check calendars and showtimes and plan accordingly. Fortunately, the holidays also bring some special gigs to town, most notably the now-annual four-night run of The Bad Plus at the Dakota, a "Pre-New Year's Eve" party with Connie Evingson in the new Dunsmore Room at Crooners,  and an exciting list of options for a jazzy New Year's Eve.

Big Gigs This Week!
The Bad Plus
December 25-28.Most venues aren't even open Christmas Day, but the Dakota will vibrate for four nights, two sets per night, with the umpteenth holiday residency of The Bad Plus. The trio that has attained rock star status throughout the world with their unique arrangements of pop hits, Stravinsky, and wholly original compositions pays tribute to its Twin Cities origins every holiday. In the past two years, TBP has released three albums-- their version of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, their latest collection of mostly originals dubbed Inevitable Western,  and their collaboration with saxophonist Joshua Redman. Expect the guys to draw from the recent releases as well as from their 15-year treasure trove and likely some new material.

Jon Wood
December 26. The weekly double-header at the Black Dog features strings and things, starting the evening with young guitarist Jon Wood's Iron Chops ensemble (guitarist Jon with saxophonist Dave Brattain, bassist Graydon Peterson and drummer Mac Santiago), followed by the veteran explorers of Framework (guitarist Chris Olson, bassist Chris Bates, drummer Jay Epstein), with special guest, Saturday Night Jazz at the Black Dog curator Steve Kenny on FLUMPET™.

Pavel Jany
More strings-- the weekly gig of the Talking Strings (Pavel Jany, Gary Schulte) at the Loring Pasta Bar. Another weekly filled with magic, the Benny Weinbeck Trio (Weinbeck on piano with Gordy Johnson on bass and Phil Hey on drums) plays in the lounge at Parma 8200; and the weekend's dinner sets at the Icehouse feature regulars Bryan Nichols on piano and Zacc Harris on guitar.

Judi Vinar
Crooners Lounge cranks up the heat with the Wolverines Quartet(Rick Carlson, Steve Pikal, Jendeen Forberg and Doug Haining), featuring long-time vocal associate Judy Vinar.

Sunday, December 27. Jazz Brunch options: The Mill City Hot Club at Hell's Kitchen; the Andrew Walesch Trio at Crooners Lounge; Patty and the Buttons at the Aster. And for a sublime late afternoon break, Joel Shapira offers solo guitar at the Black Dog (4-6 pm).

Continuing the Jazz @ St. Barney's series, it's the annual Big Band Christmas, this year with the Jazz on the Prairie Big Band at St. Barnabas Church in Plymouth. "They'll rock the joint with holiday favorites done the way only a big band can. A great time to celebrate, after all the pre-Christmas rush is over."

Jerry O'Hagan Orchestra
And if you like a big band but crave a dance floor as well, head to Cinema Ballroom in St Paul for a night with the Jerry O'Hagan Orchestra with Charmin Michelle singing out front. Jerry's announced his retirement but the music will continue.

Add caption
Monday, December 28. It's a young cats night at Jazz Central, with three college guys who sound years older -- Drummer Edmund Caitlin (McGill University) mixes it up with vibes master Levi Schwartzberg (U of M) and bass ace Charlie Lincoln (Berklee College of Music). Their winter break, our good fortune.

JT Bates
At the Icehouse, JT's Jazz Implosion truly implodes tonight as curator/drummer JT releases his long-awaited mostly solo album, Open Relationships, filled with inventive percussion augmented by some guitar from Jeremy Ylvisaker and electronics courtesy of Mark McGee. "With a focus on manipulated recordings of solo drum arrangements, this instrumental album is a cohesive collection of layered drones, glitched rhythms, and sonic textures that make the idea of a genre tag irrelevant and incomplete." But that is the middle set--there's more. Opening set brings together two of the area's master improvisers, vocalist/spoken word artist Mankwe Ndosi and percussionist Davu Seru; a closing set features Panhandlers(Ryan Olson and James Buckley).

Jake Baldwin
Tuesday, December 29. The new Dunsmore Room at Crooners brings in a younger generation of talents tonight, the first horn ensemble to appear on the new stage that has already seen two sold-out performances during its opening week. Tonight, New England Conservatory grad Jake Baldwin will blow one of the finest, and widest-ranging trumpets, among the area's young lions, leading a quartet with Ted Godbout on the Bosendorfer, Ted Olsen on bass and Andres Crovetti on drums. Each of these artists hones his chops in numerous area bands cutting across genres. Expect some original music, but Jake notes that "we decided as a group to just play tunes that we all like, but don't get to play much. Most of all, we are just trying to have fun!"

Lucia Sarmiento
Something a little different at Jazz Central for Big Band Night's "5th Tuesday" -- the 7-piece Little Big Band, male rhythm section, female horn section, drawing on talents from the upper Midwest and beyond -- Mandy Jones (alto sax), Lucia Sarmiento Roccagliata (tenor sax), Elizabeth Stodolka (trumpet), Cody LeDuc (filling in for Lauren Husting on trombone), Zach Sershon (piano), Matt Franke (bass) and Zach Schmidt (drums).

Take a time out between the holidays at Vieux Carré, where pianist Mary Louise Knutson opens the evening with some solo musings, followed by fleet-fingered guitarist Paul Renzand his trio.
Paul Renz

Tuesday-Wednesday, December 29-30. Always a crowd pleaser, the New Standards(Chan Polling, John Munson, Steve Roehm) celebrate the end of the year at the Dakota.

Connie Evingson
Wednesday, December 30. Why wait for New Year's Eve? You can enjoy dinner with songbird Connie Evingson tonight in the Dunsmore Room at Crooners Lounge (along with Mary Louise Knutson, Chris Bates and Dave Karr). Limited seating remains so call to reserve now!

Luke Peterson
And come down early for the Wednesday night "new music" gig at Jazz Central, as this band is going to draw a lot of friends and family. The Luke Peterson Quintet features young talents briefly home from college studies, all alums of the Dakota Combo. Leader, drummer Luke Peterson is studying math and jazz at Northwestern University; his cohorts include saxophonist Peter Goggin (University of Michigan), trombonist Jack Courtright (Eastman School of Music), pianist Will Kjeer (California Institute of Arts), and bassist Charlie Lincoln (Berklee College of Music). Close your eyes, and this band will sound like one of our veteran ensembles.

Carole Martin
Thursday, December 31. There's New Year's Eve celebrations all over the Metro --visit Jazz Police for a more thorough round-up of jazzy events:
·         Debbie Duncan Quartet Crooners Lounge
·         Carole Martin, the Artists Quarter NY Eve Party at Hell's Kitchen

Young jazz artists prevail this weekend, including Trap Tube, Saturday Night Jazz at the Black Dog

© Andrea Canter
Young musicians dominate the weekend as we recover from a jazz-packed New Year's Eve. Yet it's an old favorite tickling the ivories in the new Dunsmore Room; and a favorite NOLA-style band releasing a new recording at the end of the week. Not a bad start to 2016.

Big Gigs This Week
Chris Lomheim
Friday, January 1. New Year's Day is always a bit slow for live music, but Orchestra Hall is open and pianist Chris Lomheim is in the lobby (e.g., free!) for an hour before the 2 pm orchestra concert-- you don't need a concert ticket for the prelude!

Ben Ehrlich, Sound Skirmish
Give your ears a jumpstart for 2016 with the youthful energy of Sound Skirmish at Jazz Central. This quartet launched about two years ago, before the full band was out of high school. Now, all involved in college music programs, and home for the holidays, SS features pianist Patrick Adkins (Lawrence Conservatory), vibraphonist Levi Schwartzberg (U of M), bassist Drew Stinson (McNally Smith) and drummer Ben Ehrlich (U of North Texas).

Edmund Caitlin, The Big Other
More young lions on the prowl tonight at the Gingko Coffeehouse in St Paul with The Big Other. The quartet of young college jazzers include two Mounds View High School grads, Peter Goggin on alto (U of Michigan) and Sam Worthington on bass (Peabody Conservatory), with pals Aidan Sponheim on trumpet (Lawrence Conservatory) and Edmund Caitlin (McGill U) on drums.

James Buckley
And dinner at the Icehouse might be just the antidote to New Year's Eve madness, and all the more enjoyable with piano/bass duo music from Bryan Nichols and James Buckley during the dinner hours.

Note about The Nicollet: Closed for New Years, the Friday Night Jazz series will be on a short vacation as the venue undergoes some remodeling and rebranding under new ownership. Watch for the return of Friday Night Jazz under the new club name (TBA), with an expanded kitchen, on January 22!

Reynold Philipsek
Friday-Saturday, January 1-2. Early evenings get a boost at Crooners Lounge this weekend, with guitarist Reynold Philipsekentertaining during Happy Hour. Reynold probably has the thickest book of original tunes in the Midwest!

In the Lobby Bar at the Saint Paul Hotel, JoAnn Funk and Jeff Brueske resume their usual winter weekend gigs, standards and more.

Patty Peterson
Saturday, January 2.Patty Peterson and Friends start the new year in the lounge at Crooner's -- with her usual suspects, nephew Jason Peterson DeLaire and pals Billy Franze and Bobby Vandell. It's always a party night with Patty!

At the Dakota, one of the area's favorite vocal pairings-- Ginger Commodore and Dennis Spears, with Ginger's band featuring Rich Manik, Lee Blaske, Tony Axtell and Bobby Commodore. It's an embarrassment of riches.

Levi Schwartzberg
At the Black Dog, Steve Kenny opens the 2016 season of weekly nights with Central Standard Time, a cross-generational band that launched about a year ago, featuring some of the hottest young talents in the area meshing seamlessly with veteran artists. It's an expanded ensemble tonight with Kenny (FLUMPET) and special guests Brandon Wozniak (saxes) and JT Bates (drums), along with young guns, Levi Schwartzberg (vibes), Will Kjeer (piano) and Charlie Lincoln (bass), taking a break from college studies.  And speaking of young guns, four high school seniors make up Trap Tube, playing the opening set -- Jordan Anderson on piano with Gerhardt Robinson (saxes), Alma Engebretson (bass) and Simon Petrick (drums).

Will Schmid
More teen wizards take the stage at the 318 Cafe in Excelsior as the Will Schmid Duos perform-- a two-guitar duet featuring Will and Adam Astrup opens, followed by Will and vocalist Kalli Anderson.

Sunday, January 3. Jazz brunch around the metro: The Andrew Walesch Trio at Crooners Lounge; Patty and the Buttons swing it at the Aster; Robert Everest at Maria's.  In the afternoon, Doug Little's Charanga Tropical brings some Havana heat to the Icehouse for their monthly gig; in the evening, the Zacc Harris Trio is at the Riverview Wine Bar, their home for the past decade.

Arne Fogel
Monday, January 4.Big band night in Fridley-- the Acme Jazz Company plays in the lounge at Crooners, and of course the band features the area's own "crooner,"Arne Fogel.

Will Kjeer
In the spotlight tonight at Jazz Central, young piano whiz Will Kjeerassembles a band of somewhat older area notables-- Nelson Devereaux on saxes, Graydon Peterson on bass, and Miguel Hurtado on drums. Catch will now before he heads back to studies at Cal Arts.

Cory Healey
At the Icehouse, JT's Jazz Implosion is a double feature, starting out with '58 Belvedere -- a trio heavy on guitar with Dean Granros and Pat Keen (adding vocals) and drummer "Diamond" Dave Power, playing what they describe as "explosive improvised experimental modern dance-core thrash music." The second set presents the magic of Cory Healey's Beautiful Sunshine Band, with the leader on drums, Jake Baldwin on trumpet, Brandon Wozniak on sax, Zacc Harris on guitar and Erik Fratzke on bass.

Butch Thompson
Tuesday, January 5. If you haven't visited the new Dunsmore Room at Crooners yet, tonight is a perfect opportunity (assuming you can still get a reservation)! Butch Thompson takes his turn at the Bösendorfer grand with a solo night that we can only anticipate as a perfect context for ragtime and blues. There's no cover and reasonable minimums from the dining room menu and bar.

Vieux Carré holds a piano night of its own, with Chris Lomheimhandling the happy hour sets and the Phil Aaron Trio coming on for the rest of the evening.

Travis Anderson
At the Black Dog, it is First Tuesday, meaning Dean Magraw and Davu Seru will offer their usual menu of fun and surprise. The Bill Simenson Orchestra takes the first turn of 2016 for Big Band Tuesday at Jazz Central, and the always-off-the wall fun of the Travis Anderson Trio warms the winter night at the Dakota.

Pete Snell
Wednesday, January 6. The plethora of local craft breweries has also expanded the venues for live music. Tonight, the Pete Snell Trio (with Lee Blaske and Jim Chenoweth) performs at the Lupine Brewing Company in Delano, so you can enjoy the veteran saxman with a one-of-a-kind brew.

Katia Cardenas
At the Dakota, vocalist Katia Cardenas returns for a night from her eclectic songbook.

Thursday, January 7. It's a party whenever the Jack Brass Band is on stage, and when they release a new recording, it's a holiday party! The JBB brings their new CD to Vieux Carré, following opening solo piano sets from multi-instrumentalist Jon Pemberton.
Jack Brass Band

At the Dakota, the trombone-wielding Potash Twins return for another dose of low-brass adventures. Twins Adeev (SUNY Purchase) and Ezra (Manhattan School of Music) have been protege's of Wynton Marsalis, and are no strangers to Minnesota, having performed at the State Fair, First Avenue and Icehouse as well as the Dakota. And what could be more fun that two trombones?

Speaking of fun, The Wolverines are at it again at Hell's Kitchen, while Vocal Jazz Night at Jazz Central will feature local singer/songwriter/cabaret artist Erin Livingston, in a jazzy frame of mind with pianist Marc Z.

Highlights in Twin Cities Jazz: Fifteen Plus in 2015

© Andrea Canter

Looking back on 2015, it was truly a good year for the Twin Cities jazz scene, from the overflowing crowd that paid tribute to the late Leigh Kamman back in January to the record-setting Twin Cities Jazz Festival in late June to new venues and new series of jazz and improvised music throughout the Metro. It's risky to create a "top 10" list because there's always #11+ so I'll just note some (15) of the many highlights that prove jazz is alive and well in the Twin Cities:

Leigh Kamman Memorial (TC7)
  • The Memorial for Leigh Kamman (January 25) at the Saint Paul Hotel packed the Ballroom for a non-stop run of sets from a Who's Who of Twin Cities jazz artists.
Dr John at CHS Field
  • With its first Artistic Director, Francisco Mela, and hosting the first music event in the new CHS Field, the 2015 Twin Cities Jazz Festival drew more people to hear more live music at more venues than ever before. Headliners Dr. John, Mela, and the Holland/Potter/ Loueke/ Harland Quartet topped the listing of over 70 bands from seasoned pros to the stars of tomorrow on the Youth Stage. And proving that it is OK to have more than one festival per year, the Twin Cities Jazz Fest brings back the Winter Festival on January 31, 2016
Atlantis Quartet, Studio Z Jazz Fest
  • Curated by Zacc Harris, Jazz at Studio Zcompleted its third season and received funding to launch a fourth in November, and held its third annual Winter Jazz Fest at Studio Z in February; the fourth fest is scheduled for February 13, 2016.

Friday Night Jazz at The Nicollet
  • Saturday Night Jazz at the Black Dog continued through the year, while curator Steve Kenny launched the Minneapolis companion series, Friday Night Jazz at The Nicollet in March, guaranteeing there will always be some great modern jazz every weekend on both sides of the Metro. Kenny also received a second grant to direct the summer All Originals series, held on ten Thursday nights at Studio Z, promoting original compositions and arrangements.

Snake Oil at the Icehouse
  •        JT's Jazz Implosion, which curator JT Bates carried over from the old Clown Lounge in St. Paul, continued at the Icehouse in Minneapolis on Monday nights, featuring not only the best and the brightest of local modern jazz practitioners but also some very cool visiting artists, like Tim Berne's Snake Oil in May and Jen Shyu's one-woman "opera" project in November.

Ron Miles, JT Bates in Target Atrium
  •      Jazz in the Target Atrium completed its first full season at Orchestra Hall, and curator Jeremy Walker launched a second season in October, bringing in Wessell 'Warmdaddy' Anderson and Ron Miles for the fall concerts.

  •       Walker West Music Academy received funding from the Knight Foundation to support the new Eight O'Clock Jump series, featuring the Ron Carter Trio, Nicole Mitchell, Eric Gravatt, Yolande Bruce and Anthony Walker in fall 2015 and continuing with 4-5 concerts in winter/spring 2016.

  •
    Levi Schwartzberg at Jazz Central
    •       Mac Santiago and friends kept the faith at Jazz Central Studios, steering the nonprofit performance and studio space through another year of live jazz, at least five nights per week, and offering (mostly) local musicians a space to try out new music and new configurations, from small ensembles to big bands to vocalists, and especially providing a venue for our youngest jazzers to jam and soar. And perhaps even more important, these young musicians pull in the jazz audience of tomorrow, young people (musically oriented or not) who are getting a first-hand dose of modern jazz.

Group 47 at Vieux Carre'
  •       Vieux Carré opened for real in July after a series of pop-up events, turning the old Artists Quarter space into a classy bar, eatery and venue for a wide range of music, including gigs with top Twin Cities jazz artists.

  •
Owner Mary T opened the Dunsmore Room

  •      Crooners Lounge brought live jazz (and more) to Fridley, and in December launched the Dunsmore Room with back-to-back sell-outs, perhaps the most inviting new listeningspace of the past few years. Or decade. Kudos to Dunsmore curator Andrew Walesch for already assembling an outstanding line-up for the first month of 2016.

Cecile McLorin Salvant
  •       Top international touring artists hit Twin Cities stages throughout the year, including Dianne Reeves, Charles Lloyd, Bill Frisell, Cecile McLorin Salvant, Kurt Elling, Ron Carter, Jose James, Jane Monheit, Cassandra Wilson, Jack DeJohnette, Chris Potter, Tierney Sutton, Anat Cohen, Danilo Perez, Tim Berne, Cyrus Chestnut, Terence Blanchard, Benny Green, Regina Carter, Pat Martino, Ramsey Lewis,  Karrin Allyson,  Rene Marie, Bill Carrothers..... and more

  •
    Doug Little, Charanga Torpical
In June, Doug Little's Charanga Tropical became the first American band to perform at the International Danzon Festival in Havana

  •       Irv Williams turned 96, released another CD, and still plays happy hour at the Dakota almost every Friday night
    Irv Williams

  •      The 2016 Grammy Nominations include jazz artists currently or formerly connected to the Twin Cities: Composer and bandleader Maria Schneider has a hand in three nominations; former resident and vocalist Karrin Allyson is nominated for top vocal album; South High alum José James, strangely overlooked by the Grammy process, released one of a small handful of albums designated "five-star" stunners by Downbeat Magazine (Yesterday I Had the Blues: The Music of Billie Holiday).
    Jose' James

  • KBEM Jazz 88 radio celebrated 45 years of broadcasting, which currently includes live coverage of the Twin Cities Jazz Festival, Christian McBride's Jazz Night in America, delayed broadcasts of Jazz in the Target Atrium, and perpetual rebroadcasts of Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz, as well as local favorites and multiple opportunities for students to gain broadcast experience in a jazz context.

New Recordings in 2015

A lot of new music was released in late 2014, but 2015 was a fertile year as well, with new releases from Irv Williams, Reynold Philipsek, JT Bates, Linda Peterson, Andrew Walesch, King Fletcher Woods, Dean Sorenson, Steven Hobert, Graydon Peterson, Dean Granros, and Chris Thomson, and former residents John Raymond, Karrin Allyson, Maria Schneider, Peg Carrothers, Nancy Harms, Jose' James, and The Bad Plus. (And sorry to any I have omitted here.)

Coming in 2016!

There's every reason to expect 2016 will be another strong year on the local jazz scene, as we already can anticipate
  •  Winter Jazz Fest on January 31 (Saint Paul Hotel)
  •  Studio Z Winter Jazz Fest on February 13 (Studio Z)
  •  Live music 2-3 nights per week in the Dunsmore Room at Crooners Lounge, including a March 23 engagement with Geoffrey Keezer
  •  Saturday Night Jazz at the Black Dog every weekend, with Zacc Harris Group, Chris Bates Good Vibes Trio, and Dave Karr Group in January

Bryan Nichols brings his trio to Walker West, January 8th

© Andrea Canter
The usual January deep-freeze is rumored to be enroute. Better get out and hear some hot jazz this weekend and store up some fuel to keep the music burning through the week! The 8'Oclock Jump series returns to Walker West; there's a new trio of veterans at the Black Dog; a Minnesota Orchestra retiree heads to the Dunsmore Room.. and more in area jazz this week.

Big Gigs This Week
JT Bates
Friday, January 8. Walker West Music Academy hosts the 2016 season of the Eight O'Clock Jump concert series, getting underway tonight with the Bryan Nichols Trio-- aka Nichols/Bates/Bates as pianist Bryan goes at it with Chris and JT Bates on bass and drums. It's sometimes radical, sometimes simply divine. And the intimate performance space at WWMA is a perfect environment.

Pete Whitman with the X-Tet
In another intimate space, the Pete Whitman X-Tet fills the subterranean gallery at Jazz Central, offering a too-rare opportunity to hear ten of the area's finest.

Jay Young
At the Dakota, Jay Young's Lyric Factory is back with another edition of Bandwidth, examining music that filled the airwaves from the likes of Prince, El Debarge, Jimi Hendrix, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Miles Davis, Elton John and more. Jay--who plays the smaller piccolo bass in this band, assembles a fine line-up including son Ian on bass, Thom West on keys, Kevin Washington on drums, Ernest Bisong on violin, and vocalists Yolande Bruce, Heather McElrath and Linda Sloan.
Charmin and Denny
At Parma 8200, Denny Malmberg leads a swinging trio with bassist Tom Lewis and vocalist Charmin Michele. More swing in store at Vieux Carré as the Southside Aces gather on stage, following the evening's opening duo of pianist Joe Strachan and bassist Ted Olsen. Pretty much the whole history of jazz will be covered between 6 pm and midnight!

Tom Lewis and Pete Snell
Saturday, January 9. The veterans take over as Saturday Night Jazz at the Black Dog presents the Pete Snell Trio(with Tom Lewis and Phil Aaron), followed by a newish trio of jazz stalwarts -- Dean Granros, Chris Bates and Davu Seru, dubbed the Golden Circle Trio.... with rumors of a surprise guest.

Andrew Walesch
Jazz @ St. Barneys (at St Barnabas Lutheran Church in Plymouth) holds another concert in its season of stellar local talents. Tonight, young singer/pianist Andrew Walesch is in the spotlight with bassist Jeremy Boettcher and drummer Jay Epstein. Very likely Walesch will include some nods to muse Frank Sinatra as well as some material that shows his range goes well beyond Frank.

Kevin Gastonguay (Grain)
At the Amsterdam, swing is in season, starting out with the Mississippi Hot Club, followed by the Jazzland Wonderband, while the talents of Zacc Harris's guitar students await early arrivals at Vieux Carré, followed by Grain, JT Bates'organ trio (with Harris and Kevin Gastonguay).

And the regulars--hear the Talking Strings at the Loring Pasta Bar and Benny Weinbeck Trio at Parma 8200.

James Buckley
Friday/Saturday, January 8-9. In the Lobby Bar at the Saint Paul Hotel, JoAnn Funk and Jeff Brueske continue their weekend séance, while at the Icehouse, guitarist Jake Hanson and bassist James Buckley have back-to-back nights of dinner sets.

Prudence Johnson
Sunday, January 10. There's one less jazz brunch as Crooners has discontinued brunch in favor of Sunday night music in the Dunsmore Room. And three Sundays per month, that means Dan Chouinard's new Birthday Club. It's a bit of a reprise of his Singers Voice series that ran 1990-2000 at the Dakota. This time Dan and guest vocalists will celebrate musical birthdays and anniversaries. And what better pairing to start off the series than Dan and Prudence Johnson? hard to imagine they won't include some Gershwin even if neither George nor Ira has a January birthday?

Ernie Watts
Chicago Blues meets classical string quartet, world percussion and world renowned saxophone when Corky Siegel's Chamber Blues arrives at the Dakota tonight. In addition to percussionist Frank Donaldson and the West End String Quartet, the masterful Ernie Watts will be on the bandstand with the creative blues harmonicist. Hard to label, easy to enjoy.

Monday, January 11. In the lounge at Crooners, vocalist Colleen Raye explores the works of women songwriters of the 40s and 50s.  Coming from a different continent, Ethiopian bassist, now Minnesota resident Yonathan Bekure takes the spotlight at Jazz Central with unique, "diverse and soulful" music.

Tony Balluff, Southside Aces
From their gig at Vieux Carré, now the Southside Aces move across the river to sister club, The Dakota, bringing along their high-spirited interpretations of traditional New Orleans bands.

Tuesday, January 12. It's timpanist/drummer Peter Kogan's turn to check out the Dunsmore Room at Crooners' Lounge, and his quartet is as formidable an ensemble as any-- Pete Whitman on saxes, Anthony Cox on bass, and Phil Aaron getting his first crack at the Bösendorfer. Better make reservations.

Chris Lomheim
At Vieux Carré, it's the original Chris Lomheim Trio -- pianist Lomheim with Gordy Johnson and Jay Epstein reprising their efforts on the 2014 recording, Timelines. Expect some Lomheim originals and engaging covers.

At the Black Dog, second Tuesdays feature the Chris Olson Project, and tonight the guitar ace engages in duets with bassist Chris Bates. New string theories! And it's big band night at Jazz Central, with the Cedar Avenue Big Band on full display.

Chris Bates
Wednesday, January 13. Chris Bates has been leading a monthly new music night at Jazz Central (Magica Improvisada), featuring different configurations of top improvisers. To start 2016, he's decided to feature the same ensemble for the first three months -- joining pianist Joe Strachan and drummer Matt Buckner for
"Inventions and Dimensions." Says Chris, We’ll be workshopping everything over the first two months in an open rehearsal setting and then performing this new music for a digital release at the third session."

Adam Meckler Orchestra
Thursday, January 14. Back for a mostly monthly gig, the Adam Meckler Orchestra returns to Vieux Carré with a promise of some new tunes from Adam's creative pen.

You can go swing crazy with Gypsy Mania at Hell's Kitchen, or head to Jazz Central for Vocal Jazz Night(TBA).  And if you somehow missed the Southside Aces at their other gigs this week, there's one more--swing dance at the Eagles Club.

You maybe got here looking for the "website" JazzINK.com? After about 8 years managing the site and the blog, I decided to move all my jazz promos, writings, etc. to an expanded blog (here). There will be some bumps during this transition but the end result will hopefully be more user friendly and more Twin Cities-focused, although national artist reviews, CD reviews, festival previews and reviews, etc. will appear along the way. Will also be experimenting with the blog appearance and layout. Stay tuned and keep coming back -- expect posts more often as well as continuing weekly Lead Sheet!

Bandleader Percy Hughes, 1922-2015

Percy Hughes with Ellington Echoes, 2005

One of the beloved legends of Minnesota jazz, bandleader and multi-reed player Percy Hughes passed away on December 30 at age 93. Most recently known as the leader of Ellington Echoes, Hughes was inducted into the Minnesota Jazz Hall of Fame in 1987 and the Minnesota Music hall of Fame in 1996. He was also well known for his skills on the tennis court as a player and teacher, and was the subject of a 2011 book, Sports and All That Jazz: The Percy Hughes Story by Twin Cities writer Jim Swanson. “He had a sweet, warm sax sound, a very classic style,” said Lowell Pickett, owner of the Dakota Jazz Club.
Percy grew up in St. Paul, surrounded by music. His father played French horn, his mother played piano. Young Percy first took up the clarinet at age 11, moving on to soprano, alto and tenor saxophone. While attending St. Paul Central High School, he was introduced to tennis, and also developed considerable talent on the baseball field. A member of the Army Ground Forces Band during World War II, Percy played with musicians from the Ellington and Basie bands, and also played infield on the regiment baseball team against pros from the Negro leagues, including Satchel Paige and Jackie Robinson. But he turned down a chance to pursue baseball because of racism he’d experienced in the South, instead pursuing music when he returned home to the Twin Cities in 1946, where he formed his first jazz ensemble and studied at the Minneapolis College of Music and MacPhail Center for Music.

Percy led a band at the Flame for six years, then at the Point Supper Club in Golden Valley for 17 years until the club burned down, followed by a decade in the Kashmiri Room of the Ambassador Motor Lodge. He became one of the original members of Red Wolfe’s Ellington Echoes in the early 70s, taking over as bandleader when Wolfe died in 1991.“I wanted to keep Red’s name alive,” Percy said. “We were like brothers. You still hear about Glenn Miller, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Count Basie and Duke Ellington. They’re long gone but they were the giants of jazz. Red Wolfe’s name belongs right up there in my book.”

Percy Hughes, 2005
Percy's music career as big band and combo leader/arranger spanned over 50 years; he also taught private music lessons, grade school programs and jazz workshops for much of his career, and was a long-time board member of the Twin Cities Jazz Society. When inducted into the Minnesota Jazz Hall of Fame in 1987, he noted that "I have endeavored to uphold the highest standards of musicianship, leadership and professional recognition."Percy recorded a couple of albums, including I Remember Judy, dedicated to his late wife, singer Judy Perkins, who died of cancer in 1975.

Unable to support a family as a musician, and seeking work that kept nights free for music, Hughes worked as a mail carrier for 27 years. “Carrying mail was the perfect day job for me,” he said. “It was good exercise and I enjoyed the people on my route."When he discovered there was no tennis program for  employees, he started a tennis league, later becoming a volunteer and certified instructor for the Senior Tennis Players Club and for the Inner City Tennis program. But “his first love was music,” said his son, Percy Hughes III of Maplewood. “Then tennis. And he loved fishing. From the Minnesota Orchestra percussion section to jazz venues throughout the Twin Cities, timpanist/drummer Peter Kogan has emerged as a force to be reckoned with on the local jazz scene. On the heels of his recent acclaimed CD release, Some Monsterful Wonder Thing, Kogan brings a quartet to the new Dunsmore Room at Crooners Lounge in Fridley on Tuesday, January 12. His very esteemed cohorts include Pete Whitman (saxophones), Phil Aaron (piano) and Anthony Cox (bass).

Peter Kogan began musical studies on violin at age six, adding piano at age eight and drums at age ten. A year later he began serious study with Saul Goodman, timpanist of New York Philharmonic, who would  become his mentor throughout his high school and college studies. After studying at the Juilliard School, he completed the college music program at the Cleveland Institute of Music under the tutelage of Cloyd Duff of the Cleveland Orchestra. He joined the Cleveland Orchestra under George Szell in 1969 as Section Percussion, and was appointed Principal Percussion and Associate Principal Timpani of the Pittsburgh Symphony a few years later.

Peter Kogan
Drawn by his passion for jazz, blues and rock, Peter left the Pittsburgh Symphony in 1977 for a six-year stint in New York City composing and playing drumset. He backed Blues legends Lightnin' Hopkins, Honey-Boy Edwards, and Jimmy Witherspoon, and Rock & Roll legend Bo Diddley, as well as such groups as the Drifters and the Crystals. He also performed with the Larry Elgart Big Band and wrote for and performed with the fusion band, Scratch n' Sniff; he was profiled in Modern Drummer Magazine in 1984. Peter returned to the classical context, first with the Honolulu Symphony as drumset player and timpanist in 1984, and two years later joined the Minnesota Orchestra as principal timpani.

Kogan recently returned again to jazz and composition, playing with Le Jazz Cool All Stars, which includes Minnesota Orchestra members Charles Lazarus and David Williamson, and leading his septet, Some Monsterful Wonderthing. Kogan is on the affiliate faculty of the University of Minnesota School of Music, is a member of the Symphonic Committee of the Percussive Arts Society, serves as guest artist with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and designs and builds Klassischewienerpauken™ (classical Viennese timpani) for historically appropriate performances.

Pete Whitman
Veteran sax/flute performer, composer, and arranger Pete Whitman toured internationally with the Glenn Miller Orchestra after completing jazz studies at North Texas State, then moved to the Twin Cities in 1988. Pete's credits on tenor, alto, soprano and flute include performing with Randy Brecker, Jack McDuff, the Woody Herman Orchestra,, Michael Feinstein, Debbie Boone, Rosemary Clooney, Barbara Dennerlein, Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers, Dave Stryker, Curtis Fuller and Andres Prado. Perhaps best known as the co-founder and leader of the X-Tet, Pete also works regularly with the Jazz MN Orchestra, Mississippi, Bottomless Pit, and the Laura Caviani Quartet. He was commissioned to score the film, Been Rich All My Life, about a quartet of octogenarians reprising their dancing days in vaudeville. A dedicated educator, Whitman heads the Woodwind and Brass Department at St. Paul’s McNally Smith College of Music, teaching saxophone, improvisation, and arranging, and leading the McNally Smith X-Tet.

Anthony Cox
Internationally renowned bassist Anthony Cox studied bass at the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire, then headed to New York, building a reputation that took him on tour with Stan Getz.  In the early 90s, he returned to the Twin Cities but his career has hardly been limited by his residence. Over the years, Cox has worked and/or recorded with Joe Lovano, Sam Rivers, Dewey Redman, Geri Allen, Arthur Blythe, and Uri Caine, playing upright acoustic, electric and Spanish acoustic bass. With Bill Carrothers and Jay Epstein, he has performed and recorded as Easy Company, and recently has appeared at the Icehouse, Dakota, Black Dog and Jazz Central. He leads several ensembles including Happy Spirits and DD7, and is a member of Vector Families and the Atrium Jazz Ensemble, with whom he recently co-wrote and debuted "The Rage of Achilles" at Orchestra Hall.

Phil Aaron
Pianist Phil Aaron is a Chicago native whostudied music at the Berklee College of Music and the University of Illinois.  After ten years in LA, he moved to Minneapolis in 1989, becoming fully immersed in the local jazz scene. By day,  Phil works as a composer of film and television scores winning an Emmy in 2007 for his scoring work on the PBS animated series, “Auto-B-Good.” An active recording artist as sideman and on five CDs of his own, Phil plays regularly with his own trio, Lucia Newell, Dave Karr, the Phil Hey Quartet and more.  This will not be Phil's first encounter with the Bosendorfer in the Dunsmore Room, having performed and recorded on this instrument before it came to Crooners. "It has a magnificent sound," he says.

The Dunsmore Room at Crooners is ideally suited to small ensembles as an intimate space (maximum seating about 85) with a serious "listening" policy. There is no cover but instead a minimum ($15 on January 12) food and beverage purchase per person. Reservations strongly recommended. Music at 7 pm.
